Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Integrering av styrsystem till SIMATIC PCS 7: En fördjupning i SIMATIC PCS 7/Open OS2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study will focus on how Siemens controllers that are not listed in the productlibrary of the process control system PCS 7, can be integrated. The integration willbe performed using an option for PCS 7 (SIMATIC PCS 7/Open OS). The controllers to be integrated in this work are commonly found in industries today, the Siemens controllers SIMATIC S7-300/1500. These are usually not controlled from a processcontrol system, they are more commonly controlled via an operator panel next to the machine. By integrating these controllers into the process control system, they can be controlled from larger control rooms, and the production will acquire the benefits of using modern controllers.

Previous cases with similar components, where other integration techniques was used has been evaluated. In these cases the integration have shown that there are today standardized techniques for integrating single field devices so that they can be managed by process control systems. In another study investigated, where attempts have been made to integrate the function of a controller that is controlling several field devices, the study showed limitations in the technique used. According to Siemens AG however, SIMATIC PCS 7/Open OS will be able to integrate acontroller with its complete functionality into the process control system PCS 7.

The result of the work shows that integration of the controllers to PCS 7 by using the option package is possible, and the controller could be fully operated from a PCS 7-HMI. In order to make the integration with the optional package more user-friendly, it is recommended that preparations be made before integrating. Such as preparing a library in both PCS 7 and in the controller to be integrated, which are containing for example function blocks in the controller side and graphic elements corresponding to these function blocks in the PCS 7-HMI side.

Värdering av vårdhygienisk kvalitet på sjukhusavdelningar2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

British English versus American English in a Swedish School: -an investigation about attitude, preferences and reality among students, teachers and National Tests.2017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is an investigation of varieties of English used, learned, and taught, in a Swedish school. The age of the students is 15-16 and they attend grade 9. The hypothesis of this essay is that American English is the variety most students prefer and use, and that British English is the variety mainly preferred by teachers and the school system. This do not collaborate with the ‘learner-centered learning’ pedagogical view (Modiano 2009:172). The data is mainly collected in three areas. 1: a teacher survey, to determine the teachers ́ views and opinions of the varieties of English. 2: a student survey, to examine whether the students prefer one variety to the other, and if they are even aware of what variety they are speaking, and 3: the data gathered from transcribing this year’s English National Test to determine what types of English that are represented in the test.

The result of this essay confirms the hypothesis that AmE is the variety both preferred and used by younger students in Sweden today, and that these students do find that they are allowed to use any variety they wish while learning in school. BrE is still the variety preferred by teachers and the school system, however AmE is catching up. Furthermore, the students do have a high level of participation in their own acquisition of English.

Using remote sensing and aerial archaeology to detect pit house features in Worldview-2 satellite imagery.: A case study for the Bridge River archaeological pit house village in south-central British Columbia, Canada.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

It is well known that archaeological sites are important sources for understanding past human activity. However, those sites yet to be identified and further investigated are under a great risk of being lost or damaged before their archaeological significance is fully recognized. The aim of this research was to analyze the potential use of remote sensing and aerial archaeology techniques integrated within a geographic information system (GIS) for the purpose of remotely studying pit house archaeology. As pit house archaeological sites in North America have rarely been studied with a focus in remote sensing, this study intended to identify these features by processing very high resolution satellite imagery and assessing how accurately the identified features could be automatically mapped with the use of a GIS. A Worldview-2 satellite image of the Bridge River pit house village in Lillooet, south-central British Columbia, was processed within ArcGIS 10.1 (ESRI), ERDAS Imagine 2011 (Intergraph) and eCognition Developer 8 (Trimble) to identify spatial and spectral queues representing the pit house features. The study outlined three different feature extraction methods (GIS-based, pixel-based and object-based) and evaluated which method presented the best results. Though all three methods produced similar results, the potential for performing object-based feature extraction for research in aerial archaeology proved to be more advantageous than the other two extraction methods tested.

    Abstract [en]

From domestic and industrial waste water will have to be cleaned before it can be released into lakes and streams again. This purification takes place through various stages of treatment plants. Wastewater contains many substances that are harmful to the environment as well as human and animal health, so it is important that the purification that is done is done in an efficient and thoughtful manner. The steps that are common in Swedish cleaning plants are mechanical, biological and chemical purification. These purification steps ensure that larger particles do not come out to the open water, convert nitrogen into nitrogen through the activation process, and that by chemical treatment, the emission of phosphorus is reduced. All of these purification steps can be designed differently and vary from purification plants to purification plants. Therefore, the degree of purification and emissions can distinguish between different treatment plants. Because there are many factors involved in the processes at Swedish waste treatment plants, it is important to carry out annual audits to detect problems that can lead to environmental damage. If cleaning does not work, exercise can increase in lakes and seas, which causes people and animals to suffer. Bottom dead and acid deficiency are already a major problem for the Baltic Sea. In order to reduce the negative environmental effects, emissions of nutrients are drastically reduced. This concerns the release of nutrients from all countries around the Baltic Sea.This study focuses on nitrogen and phosphorus purification from 5 wastewater treatment plants, Henriksdal's purification plant (Stockholm), Ryaverket (Gothenburg), Sjölunda purification plant (Malmö), Kungssängsverket (Uppsala) and Duvbacken purification plant (Gävle). Information about its activities has been obtained through interviews and works own reports. The purification plants use different technical solutions, and all treatment plants meet today's requirements for purification. The biggest difference is the degree of nitrogen purification. All wastewater treatment plants have a history of changes in technical solutions to improve treatment. Cleaning wastewater from households and industries costs a lot of money for the treatment plants, so it's always a challenge for the wastewater treatment plants to clean the water in the best possible way without costing too much.It is expected that the cleaning requirements will be tightened and all treatment plants should continue to develop to increase efficiency. Current purification requirements are designed to suit the recipient's sensitivity. If the EU's idea of the same degree of purification across the country is transformed into requirements, Duvbacken will need to significantly improve the nitrogen treatment at the waste water treatment plant.

Skam och skamresiliens hos missbrukande kvinnor: Fem kvinnors berättelser om alkohol- och drogproblematik2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The pupose of the study is to gain a deeper understandig of how sham and- guilt problems and coping strategies against shame and guilt are related to female abuse and addiction treatment. The study conducted five qualitative interviews with women who had previously been addicted to alcohol and/or drugs but had been drug-free for at least five years. Were conducted data were analyzed from a social constructionist perspectiv, as well with stamping theory and genus theory. The result showed that, according to their statements, the women had a greater tendency to feel shame and guilt for their addiction, compared to men. There was a discrepancy between perceived demands on "the good woman and mother" and women in addiction. The hidden abuse occurred often, being an outsider and marked as addictive woman and mother, created a destructive process of negative self-image, filled with shame and guilt. The coping strategies against shame and guilt were the perception of alcohol and drug dependency as a disease. The communities in women´s groups and in 12-steps programs, where women share their life experiences had contributed to their recovery.

Earnings Management for Swedish Listed Firms: An Empirical Study on Real Earnings Management Prior to Stock Repurchases2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we follow Cooper et al. (2017) and intend to further investigate income-decreasing real earnings management through altering production and discretionary expenditure and focus on such actions taken by management prior to stock repurchase. We take on a European perspective of IFRS on real earnings management and empirically test to what extent Swedish listed firms use real earnings management prior to stock repurchases to lower share prices. We follow Roydchowdhury (2006) and Cooper et al. (2017) and establish the firms normal level of real earnings management to compare with the period when firms anticipate stock repurchases. We present our data and results through descriptive statistics and use variables identified by Zang (2011) to perform correlation and regression tests accordingly with Cooper et al. (2017). Our results suggest that managers of Swedish firms on average engage in income-increasing real earnings management and decrease such management actions prior to stock repurchases. These findings emphasize the influence of real operating decisions by firms’ that must be considered by the market around major corporate events similar to repurchasing stock.

Effektiva samverkansprocesser?: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om socialarbetarens upplevelser av samverkan i arbetet med ensamkommande flyktingbarn2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Women who suffer from domestic violence are a frequent phenomena. According to the social services, these women have the right to help and support from the social welfare board, also called “socialnämnden”. Previous research has shown that social workers must adapt their work according to the clients needs. In this study we ask ourselves: “how does these women describe the social services function in the process of leaving domestic abuse?” And also, “how would these women describe their experience with the social services?” The empirical material of this study has been gathered through 5 qualitative interviews with women who has been in a domestic abuse, and the most vital finding of this study is found to be the lack of treatment, the importance of understanding from fellow men and finally, the importance and the lack of intercommunication between different authorities and units within the social services. We argue that work by the social services should pervade both empowerment and a salutogenic mind, and adapt to each individual who seeks help. The discussion about this phenomena should continue in order to advance further methods and the general knowledge in society.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The number of breastfeeding mothers is reducing in Sweden, a contributing factor to the decrease can be the lack of confidence in their ability to breastfeed. It is important to identify mothers with low confidence in their ability to breastfeed in order to make it possible to reverse the declining number of breastfeeding mothers, and for the primary care nurse to strengthen the woman in the role of a breastfeeding mother.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe and compare mothers’ confidence in their ability to breastfeed.

Method: With the survey, the breastfeeding self-efficacy scale - short form (BSES-SF) that measures trust in its ability to breastfeed, data was collected to identify mothers with low or high confidence.

Results: The mothers’ of the age groups 18-25 years and 35-45 years, regardless of the age of the child, estimated the lowest confidence in their ability to breastfeed that they could always perform each breastfeeding in a satisfactory manner. The highest ranked trust of all mothers, regardless of their own age or child's age, was that they could always come to the conclusion that they would want continue to breastfeed. Mothers who breastfeed children in the higher age group, 10 weeks (w) – 17 w + 6 days (d), estimated in total according to BSES-SF, their confidence in breastfeeding significantly higher than mothers who breastfeed children between 0 w – 9 w + 6 d.

    Conclusion: The mothers’ in this study who breastfeed babies between 10 w – 17 w + 6 d estimate their ability to breastfeed higher than the mothers who breastfeed children between 0 w – 9 w + 6 d.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The purpose of this study is to describe and understand how consumer’s trust in sellers is affected by the seller’s characteristics, with pricing strategies as an integrated part of these.

Method: The collection of empirical material has been done through a quantitative survey through a questionnaire that has been divided into four themes. The cluster analysis contributed with seven clusters, three of which were analyzed. A correlation analysis has also been performed, which has been discussed based on the themes presented in the questionnaire, and the factor analysis contributed to six factors which have been discussed.

Result and conclusion: This study shows that consumer’s trust in sellers is influenced by several characteristics of the seller, where ability, expertise, goodwill, trustworthiness, dedication, reputation, honesty and integrity are prominent. The study shows that the seller’s pricing strategies are an integrated part of the seller’s trust-building characteristics. The conclusion is that consumers consider hiring a real estate agent to be a relatively low risk, and they are therefore willing to hire a real estate agent when selling their property.

Contribution of the thesis: The result contributes to an increased understanding of the factors affecting consumer’s trust in sellers. Furthermore, the study contributes to an understanding of how real estate agents should use pricing strategies to gain their customer’s trust, and an understanding that pricing is an integrated part of a real estate agent’s trust-building characteristics.

Suggestions for further research: Suggestions for future research are to further investigate pricing strategies and bidding in the real estate industry, to study only one theme at the time, to investigate trust from a real estate agent’s perspective, and to compare the current subject based on different demographic factors.

ByggaE – Method for Quality Assurance of Energy Efficient Buildings2017In: International Journal of Energy Production and Management, ISSN 2056-3272, E-ISSN 2056-3280, Vol. 2, no 2, 133-139 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Policies for energy efficiency requirements in buildings have become more stringent according to EU2020 goals. Despite policy regulations, requirements for energy efficiency are not met in many new buildings. Some of the reasons for this energy performance gap are related to the building process. The aim with this paper is to describe a purposed method for quality assurance of sustainable buildings according to energy efficiency. The proposed method is called ByggaE, where ‘Bygga’ is the Swedish word for ‘build’ and E is the first letter in ‘energy efficient’. It is a tool intended to lower the energy performance gap related to the building process by guiding the client and providers through the process to fulfill goals. The essence of ByggaE is the formulation of requirements by the client and the working process of identifying, handling and following up critical constructions and key issues. This working process involves all participants in the building project by using appropriate quality guidelines and checklists for documentation, communication and verification. ByggaE is a step forward ensuring that the building fulfills the defined functions and that conscious decisions are taken when goals have to be changed during the building project. The next steps are to ensure the usefulness of the method in practice by more testing and to spread knowledge about the method.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to explore what kind of religious directions are to be found among Sweden Finlanders today and what religious background they have. Another aim has been to find out if religion has a primary or a secondary role for the identity compared to culture and language among Sweden Finlanders, and if there are differences in religious identity between the first, the second and the third generation and how these assumed differences can be explained. Another purpose with this study has been to explore how religiosity among Sweden Finlanders of the first, the second and the third generation is shown through religious practice.

The theoretical framework consists of Nancy T. Ammerman’s and Lori Peek’s theories about religious identity and Thomas Hylland Eriksen’s and Fredrik Barth’s theories about boundary making processes.

This study shows there is a great diversity in religious directions among Sweden Finlanders and their religious background is also shifting. According to the results of this study, religious faith seems to be more important for the identity for religious Sweden Finlanders of the first generation compared to the second and the third generation. One of the explanations could be that Sweden Finlanders of the second and the third generation are more assimilated in the secular, Swedish society and also because second and third generation immigrants’ identity is less clear and in some cases they become an ethnic or a religious anomaly.

This study also shows that although there are differences between the religious directions, similarities also exists, especially between Sweden Finlanders of the first generation. The first generation seems to be more conservative when it comes to Bible interpretation and religious values, for example. One of the reasons might be that Finnish speaking priests from Finland, who work within Church of Sweden, have a background in the religious revival movements which has had a strong influence on the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. This study also shows there is a living and active religious life among Sweden Finlanders today, even though the pressure to assimilate has been strong.

Förväntad mätosäkerhet vid realtidsuppdaterad fri stationsetablering: En jämförelsestudie av olika fabrikat2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Connecting Competences and Pedagogical Approaches for Sustainable Development in Higher Education: A Literature Review and Framework Proposal2017In: Sustainability, ISSN 2071-1050, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 9, no 10, 1889Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research into and practice of Higher Education for Sustainable Development (HESD) have been increasing during the last two decades. These have focused on providing sustainability education to future generations of professionals. In this context, there has been considerable progress in the incorporation of SD in universities’ curricula. Most of these efforts have focussed on the design and delivery of sustainability-oriented competences. Some peer-reviewed articles have proposed different pedagogical approaches to better deliver SD in these courses; however, there has been limited research on the connection between how courses are delivered (pedagogical approaches) and how they may affect sustainability competences. This paper analyses competences and pedagogical approaches, using hermeneutics to connect these in a framework based on twelve competences and twelve pedagogical approaches found in the literature. The framework connects the course aims to delivery in HESD by highlighting the connections between pedagogical approaches and competences in a matrix structure. The framework is aimed at helping educators in creating and updating their courses to provide a more complete, holistic, and systemic sustainability education to future leaders, decision makers, educators, and change agents. To better develop mind-sets and actions of future generations, we must provide students with a complete set of sustainability competences.

New perspectives for green and sustainable chemistry and engineering: approaches from sustainable resource and energy use, management, and transformation2018In: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 172, 227-232 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The special volume on green and sustainable chemistry and engineering has fourteen papers that were considered relevant to the present day issues and discussion, such as adequate use of raw materials and efficient energy, besides considering renewable sources for materials and energy; and changing economical canons towards circular economy. Businesses, governments and Society are facing a number of challenges to tread the sustainability path and provide wellbeing for future generations. This special volume relevance provides discussions and contributions to foster that desirable future. Chemicals are ubiquitous in everyday activities. Their widespread presence provides benefits to societies’ wellbeing, but can have some deleterious effects. To counteract such effect, green engineering and sustainable assessment in industrial processes have been gathering momentum in the last thirty years. Green chemistry, green engineering, eco-efficiency, and sustainability are becoming a necessity for assessing and managing products and processes in the chemical industry. This special volume presents fourteen articles related to sustainable resource and energy use (five articles), circular economy (one article), cleaner production and sustainable process assessment (five article), and innovation in chemical products (three articles). Green and sustainable chemistry, as well as sustainable chemical engineering and renewable energy sources are required to foster and consolidate a transition towards more sustainable societies. This special volume present current trends in chemistry and chemical engineering, such as sustainable resource and energy use, circular economy, cleaner production and sustainable process assessment, and innovation in chemical products. This special volume provides insights in this direction and complementing other efforts towards such transition.
