Abstract [en]

The essay discusses the state of democracy in today's world, paying attention to conformity, totalitarian trends, and totalitarianism as threats to democracy. One of the main arguments is that conformism and totalitarian trends as such do not yet equal to totalitarianism, but external conformism and the concentration of power in the hands of some groups might offer a trajectory bound to totalitarianism. A holistic three level model differentiating between representation, structure, and drive is construed both a means of showing what is going on and as a means of finding a cure. The model is inspired by a monistic turn in the middle of the previous century. Eino Kaila, Arthur Koestler, and Paul Tillich are identified as central figures in that turn. What is common for them is that they started to anchor thought in life, seeing life as a unity. The article concludes with a discussion of re-establishing the center of personality as a way of counteracting totalitarian tendencies.

Abstract [en]

The chapter outlines interaction between religion and culture. An integrative and integral approach is presented in an attempt to show how historical phenomena, such as cultural forms, patterns of understanding, societal changes and technology, contribute to human self-understanding and the interpretation of religion. How culture shapes self-understanding and religion is discussed in terms of coordinates like centre and periphery and individual and collective. An alternative to an anthropocentric understanding of values is presented in which each thing has its own value. The plural theory of values is combined with a holistic, new materiality perspective. This perspective sees the spirit/matter unity, or the potentiality in the materiality of things, and the sensing body as essential to religious education in early childhood education.

Abstract [sv]

Denna antologi har kandidatprogrammet Människa-kultur-religionsprogrammet (MKR) vid den religionsvetenskapliga ämnesavdelningen vid Högskolan i Gävle som gemensam nämnare och övergripande tema. Programmet har en unik sammansättning kurser som bara finns i Gävle och har i en undersökning pekats ut som det mest populära kandidatprogrammet i religionsvetenskap i landet. Programmet ger en förståelse för olika religioner, livssyner och kulturella bakgrunder, och ger därmed studenten en särskild kompetens att arbeta med komplexa kulturmötesfrågor. Det ger därutöver studenten en speciell förståelse för de existentiella frågor som individen ställs inför i livets olika skeden.

Programmet svarar mot regionala såväl som nationella utbildningsbehov och tar sig an många och viktiga samtida och framtida samhällsutmaningar. Social, kulturell och existentiell hållbarhet är fenomen som kommer att framstå som allt viktigare ju mer mångfaldigt och komplext samhället blir och utgör centrala teman inom MKR-programmet.

Antologin är tänkt att användas som undervisningsmaterial för studenter som går programmet. Förhoppningen är emellertid att boken även ska intressera en större läsekrets, däribland representanter för möjliga framtida arbetsplatser för våra studenter, men även andra.

Bokens kapitel är skrivna av lärare och tidigare studenter knutna till Ämnesavdelningen för religionsvetenskap.

Templet på bokens omslag ligger i anslutning till Frasassigrottorna nära staden Genga i regionen Marche i östra Italien. Det uppfördes 1828 på initiativ av påve Leo XII och kallas Valadiertemplet efter arkitekten Giuseppe Valadier, känd för sina byggnader i neoklassisk stil. Templet rymmer en staty av madonnan och barnet. En av benämningarna för Jungfru Maria är refugium peccatorum och därför är templet även känt som ”syndarnas tillflykt” och har varit en plats dit pilgrimer sökt sig för förlåtelse.

Abstract [sv]

Hur blir jag den person jag vill vara? Frågan kan vara utgångspunkten för en lärprocess där medvetenhet om potential (andlighet) gör sig tillkänna. Bara detta ’att göra sig till känna’ visar att det inte är positionen av ’jag tänker och föreställer’ som är utgångspunkten eller bestämmande utan någonting händer med en, kanske en förvandling. Positionen ’jag tänker och föreställer’ är, som den uppfattas här, samstämmig med dualism. Den här artikeln betraktar dualismen som en kulturkategori eller som kulturell förståelseform central för den västerländska kulturen. Dualismen betraktas vidare som övergångsstadium, det finns vägar bortom både epistemologisk och ontologisk dualism. Förvandlig i sin tur handlar om att någonting händer i och för en i samband med medvetandets uppvaknade, en kvalitativ förändring. Övergången går från en jag- och reflektionscentrerad position till ny-materialitet där individualitet ses som en aspekt i tillvarons pluralitet.

Abstract [en]

The aim of the present article is to discuss what children regard as important in life and how they view the purpose of life. We proceed from a new materiality perspective. The results are based on a study conducted in Sweden among 40 6- to 9-year-old children in two different classes in two elementary schools. A qualitative data-collection method was used involving text reading and movie viewing. In the present article, we begin with a theoretical discussion of the new materiality perspective before presenting our results. The findings show that children perceive togetherness, kindness, fairness and freedom as basic values for their own part and that they consider wealth and family to be basic societal values. There is a value differentiation going on in children’s thinking, a result of which is that some values step out as basic values for children. A map of values is construed that aims to explicate children’s value orientation.
