Abstract [en]

This essay examines Swedish Dads, a photographic exhibition comprising of 45 photographs with adjoining texts, in which Swedish photographer Johan Bävman portrays dads who have been on paternal leave for a minimum of six months. The purpose of the essay is to examine how masculinity is constructed in relation to parenthood in the exhibition Swedish Dads. This analysis focuses on the intersection of masculinity and other categories. The purpose of this essay is also to analyze the way in which masculinity is constructed by using the theory of the “child oriented masculinity”. My method of choice is discourse analysis. The result of the discourse analysis of the exhibition is that there are three discourses of fatherhood present within the said exhibition: “the relationship oriented dad”, “the Swedish dad” and “the working dad”. I found that the most dominant discourse is “the relationship oriented dad”, which in turn resembles “the child oriented masculinity”, but the masculinities found in the exhibition are more concerned with gender equality than “the child oriented masculinity” is.
