Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes Mellitus type 1 (DMT1) is a chronic autoimmune disease that mainly affects children and adolescents. The disease leads to total insulin deficiency. The treatment involves self -care in the form of blood sugar checks and administration of insulin. The nurse can support and motivate adolescents to take good care of themselves. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe adolescents’ experiences from living with DMT1.

Method: A descriptive literature study. Ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach have been reviewed and divided into themes and subthemes.

Main Result: Many adolescents felt that diabetes mellitus type 1 was a stressful disease that required a lot of self-care. Adolescents experienced the feeling of being different and therefore avoided self-care. Many adolescents felt that it was important to feel independent, but most felt that they depended on support in the management of the disease.

Conclusion: Adolescents express a need for support in dealing with the disease. Through increased understanding the nurse can support the adolescents to better comply with self-care. This can lead to increased security and independence among the adolescents.
