Anthropogenic activities have accelerated the environmental change that occurs on the planet, leading to irreversible damages such as ecosystem degradation and increased frequency of extreme weather phenomena. This master’s thesis uses a proposed urban development project in Gothenburg, Sweden as a case study to demonstrate some of the potential effects of urban expansion concerning ecosystem service generation. We quantified the regulating ecosystem services carbon sequestration and water runoff mitigation within the study area by using the computer software QGIS, InVEST, and Excel. The quantification of ecosystem services is valuable for urban planning in the context of mitigating and adapting to climate change. Empirical data can be used for assessing potential trade-offs and is an important starting point for assessing the consequences of incremental changes on multiple scales. Our results show that significant water runoff mitigation and carbon accumulation potential would be at risk of being lost. The realisation of smaller urban development projects in Swedish municipalities will undoubtedly build up over time and, thus, have an increasingly larger impact on the natural landscape of the nation as a whole. Apart from the ecosystem services that we examined in this study, the realisation of new residential areas also affects ecosystem services such as pollination, wind and heat protection, and biodiversity. This opens up for further research on potential trade-offs and the balance between social, economic, and environmental sustainability in an urban planning context.
