Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden, approximately 90,000 people die annually. There are 56 million people dying worldwide. Of these 56 million people, an estimated 60% need palliative care. The goal of palliative care is that all people, regardless of illness, age, gender or geographical residence, should be offered palliative care when needed. Aim:The purpose of the study is to describe nurses' experiences of caring for people at the end of life. Method: A descriptive design was used and this study included 10 qualitative studies and two quantitative studies. The scientific articles were found in the database PubMed. Results: The results were presented in three themes: Building good relationships, nurses' emotional impact and support from colleagues. The nurses discussed how important it was to identify the patient's own needs, to be able to see the individual as unique in order to be able to give the best last time in life. Being able to support and help relatives of dying patients was considered by the nurses to be complicated in certain situations when relatives could not accept the circumstances. Most nurses found it difficult to communicate about the existential with the dying, it was a heavy burden that led to anxiety for some nurses. Conclusion: The nurses in the present literature study experienced a number of difficulties in contact with the dying patient and relatives. The nurses also experienced that a good relationship between patient and nurse, which is built on respect and trust, facilitates the work for the nurse and increases the patient's quality of life.
