Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to describe young people's experience of living and cope with a diabetes disease with focus on friends, family, diet and exercise. The study was qualitative with descriptive design. The participants were collected through convenience sampling and they answered a questionnaire. The data were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Resulted in four categories, from everyday motion to hard training, diet effects on life with diabetes, relationships with friends and family, and live and cope with diabetes disease. Participants felt that all four areas were relevant to their experience of diabetes disease. The training varied greatly among participants. Despite previous training workout now perceived as compulsory. When they applied the diet, it was important to decide when, what and how much to eat. Among friends relationship was often unchanged. The complicated relationships within the family was when the participants felt that they were controlled. Participants had negative feelings about their illness in the beginning but became more positive feelings when they learned to cope with the disease. Conclusions of the study was that participants feel that they need knowledge, information and planning to manage their illness in a good way and that it was important to have friends and family who are there and cares.
