Excessive school non-attendance : A parental perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In Sweden, 20 000 children are affected by extensive unauthorized absenteeism, where 1700 have a consecutive month or more of absence. General factors concerning the immediate relationship between the child and school is studied with a questionnaire among parents with children whom have excessive non-attendance. Results show that the frequencies of children with mental illness, neuropsychiatric disorders and giftedness among absentees was high. A higher number of risk factors influencing a child did not correlate with the rate of absenteeism. Children who had increased their attendance had received interventions, individualized education and support from school personnel.
