Abstract [sv]

Norlin, Staffansdotter, M. (2023). Midwifes lived experience of supporting the woman’s autonomy during labour. Bachelor thesis in Public Health Science. Department of Public Health and Sport Science. University of Gävle, Sweden.

Två teman identifierades i resultatet.

Abstract [en]

Norlin, Staffansdotter, M. (2023). Midwifes lived experience of supporting the woman’s autonomy during labour. Bachelor thesis in Public Health Science. Department of Public Health and Sport Science. University of Gävle, Sweden.

The purpose of this study was to investigate midwifes lived experience of supporting the woman’s autonomy during labour. A qualitative method was used, where eleven practicing midwifes from two different maternity wards in middle Sweden answered open questions in a web-based questionnaire. The data was then analysed with a thematic analyse. Two different themes were identified in the results. Theme one – Resources for supporting the woman’s autonomy, and theme two – obstacles for supporting the woman´s autonomy. Under each subject categories were identified which answered what resources and obstacles midwifes experienced for supporting the woman´s autonomy. The categories included communication, the workplace and colleagues as well as the woman´s prior knowledge and wishes. The conclusion of the study was that the midwifes need more time to be able to perform a more holistic and person-centred care during labour. To be able to understand the woman´s context the midwife needs conditions for creating a relation to the woman and through that give her the conditions for standing up in her autonomy.
