”Murder of pleasure or murder of nightmare?” : A gender perspective on the portrayal of a male and female perpetrator by the Swedish press (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to reflect how both a female and a male perpetrator were portrayed in the media by observing two different cases that both received media attention and shared a lot of similarities. We wanted to examine the similarities and differences between these two cases with support from gender and criminological theory and see if they could be understood from a gender perspective. We did this through a qualitative content analysis of Swedish newspaper articles. The result showed that the differences were more than the similarities. What we primarily could discuss based on gender perspectives were the different depictions that were made around the perpetrators' motives and approaches. The female perpetrator was portrayed as an extreme case, with a lot of emotions attached to her crime, while the male perpetrator's case was presented in a more neutral progression, focused on him being a misfit and deviant. In conclusion, we discussed and emphasized that this study can be seen as an small section of the field and therefore require additional similar research in order to make the results valuable.
