Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay will address the issue of how Western tourism affects the Tibetan population and specifically Buddhism in the Tibetan colony of McLeod Ganj in northern India. The essay explores the relation between religious, political and economic interests and what the Tibetan people think about commercialization of their culture and religion. The methods used are qualitative with literature studies, semi-structured interviews and participatory observation. The theoretical framework that this essay is a combination of are theories of interaction between Western and Tibetan Buddhism by Donald S. Lopez and Peter Moran together with theories of post-secular tourism presented by Mats Nilsson, John Urry and Jonas Larsen.

The conclusion is that religious, political and economic interests work together and benefit from each other such that Tibetan locals generally welcome Western tourism as it benefits the economy, spreads Buddhism and creates knowledge about the political situation of Tibet.
