Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Telephone consultation started in Sweden in the 1970’s to reduce the amount of doctors appointments in the increasingly burdened primary health care. And also to be able to refer the patient to the appropriate level of care early in the disease process.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how newly graduated district nurses, both novices and advanced beginners, experiences the work and practice of nursing via telephone consultation.

Method: Semistructured interviews were conducted with ten newly graduated district nurses. A qualitative, inductive content analysis was used to interpret the collected material.

Main findings: The study have shown that newly graduated district nurses experienced telephone consultation as a difficult task. Crucial for a good result and for a satisfying personal development was the support from the senior colleagues. The experiences that emerged as most aggravating was lack of time, resources and guidelines to perform good care. A decision support tool would likely save time and increase the security for the patients.

Conclusion: The study have shown that newly graduated district nurces had a positive feeling about their new profession. But the difficulty to work with telephone consultation as newly graduated showed that a guideline was required alongside support from the management to be able to carry out the work in a manner that was safe for the patients. Support from the senior colleagues had a generally positive effect on the ability to be able to grow into their new profession.
