Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe how media, in the form of a local newspaper Länstidningen, portrays social services in Södertälje. To fulfill the purpose we took as our point of departure a critical discourse analysis where we used tools from Faircloughs three-dimensional model to analyse the language used in the newspaper articles. Based on our main results, we were able to distinguish four discourses, the collaborative discourse, the financial discourse, the discourse on working methods and routines and the discourse of work environment. We also took help of social constructionism as the theory to contextualize the discourses. The results showed a relatively consistent use of language and what was prominent was that descriptions of the social services' working methods and routines were often omitted, in combination with the fact that facts and background information seldom occurred. Overall, we were able to distinguish one-sided and negative reporting on social services.
