Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During the last 30 years, logistics has grown from inventory and transports into an important role within companies’ competition strategy and competitiveness. Today, there exists companies with help from an effective logistics which has created strong competitiveness and increased profitability. The main function for all inventories is decoupling of production, either from demand or incoming deliveries. It exists three different types of inventories; inventory, products in work and finished goods inventory. All of these inventory types run the risk of get obsolescence as all product can get obsolete.

The purpose of the study was to investigate why certain products have high amounts of products in the finished goods inventory, which has significant obsolescence in a steel company with continuous production. In addition to this, inventory efficiency has been investigated and another purpose of the study was to design an analysis model for inventory efficiency. The study’s purpose has been fulfilled through literature studies and a case study at a company, whose finished goods inventory has been analyzed through a collection of data and interviews.

What has been recommended to the case company is amongst other things; cyclical inventory-checking, new and updated inventory policies, manual allocations and scrapping of certain products instead of storing them.

Based on the analysis of the study a model has been designed regarding inventory efficiency, which can assist inventory steering. The analysis model contains of eight steps, some of which include mapping, obsolescence, and reverse logistics. Future studies are required to examine inventory steering for customer satisfaction and delivery service.
