Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The meanings of the concepts "Swedishness" and "Swedish", as well as "the people" have changed historically in the media and in the general debate. In this study of the annually published magazine Smålänningens Jul (1924-), I examine how the concepts were presented in its first thirty years, with an emphasis on the war time period. The study is limited to a visual and intertextual analysis of the covers and the Christmas poems. The conclusion is that "a Swede" is portrayed as a person who preferably comes from the landscape Småland, which is perceived as a metonymy for the country of Sweden. Swedes are free, honest and hardworking and celebrate Christmas in the countryside, not in the city. At Christmas time, the "people" preserve the family traditions before the celebration of the birth of Jesus. The times of unrest and WWII is described as a distant catastrophe. The warring countries are not mentioned, nor are the causes of the war. Max Weber's heuristic concept of ideal type is proposed as a tool for examining the concepts in the media today.
