Abstract [en]

Background: Over the last three decades, diabetes mellitus type 2, DMT2 has increased significantly all over the world. Factors that have an effect on blood sugar levels are diet, physical activity and stress. The factors also have an impact on the development of DMT2. Some other risk factors are overweight, smoking and heredity factors. Self-care is described as something a person does to promote and retain health and well-being, which are important aspects of DMT2. Aim: The aim about the literature study was to describe people's experience of self-care at diabetes mellitus type 2. Method: A descriptive literature study consists of 13 articles with a qualitative approach. Both CINAHL and PubMed were used through database searches. Result: The healthcare personnel was important for a functioning self-care. Time, understanding and information regarding self-care at diabetes mellitus type 2 were keys to lifestyle change. Combining work with physical activity and physical limitations was perceived as an obstacle. It was difficult to change the diet as it became more expensive, and there was a lack of motivation for change. Self-monitoring of blood glucose was perceived as safety measures during lifestyle regulation. Loneliness manifested during lifestyle changes. Family and friends support played a major role in successful self-care management. Conclusion: The results showed that calculating ones blood sugar was felt as a safety measure. Friends and family are good supporters in self-care management of the disease. It also described experiences of the diet as lack of motivation and experiences of physical activity such as walking which many people liked. Healthcare professionals can use the results to gain an increased understanding of people's experiences of self-care of the disease.
