The unwritten agreements : Teachers’ experiences of their psychological contract (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Teachers testify to a tough work environment that affects both their opportunities to do their jobs and students’ opportunities for learning. Most teachers enjoy teaching, but their work environment entails an increased risk of work-related problems. Psychological contracts are mutual obligations and expectations between employers and employees. The purpose was to examine teachers’ experiences of their psychological contract. Seven qualitative interviews with teachers from different schools were conducted and analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: Contract of Employment, Lack of resources, Contents of the psychological contract and Psychological contract violations. The study showed that a large part of teachers' work is regulated in their psychological contracts, that it is important that to clarify expectations between teachers and their employers, and that teachers get a proper introduction process when hired. The results are in line with previous research and highlight the importance of nurturing teachers' psychological contracts.
