Nursing intervention among patients with hypertension to improved medication adherence

Abstract [en]

Background :Hypertension is a public health problem in many countries.Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, with hypertensionbeing a major influencing factor. The prevalence increases with increasing age. In thenear future, the hypertensive population will also increase rapidly due to the increase inthe elderly population. Hypertension is associated with cardiovascular disease. Nursinginterventions have the potential to promote medication adherence in patients withhypertension.Aim:The purpose of this systematic review is to describe the available informationon the. Effectiveness of nursing interventions to improve medication adherence inpatients with hypertension.Methods: A systematic review was conducted. May 2022 and April 2023, adatabase search was conducted in English and Arabic in PubMed, EBSCO and otherdatabases during 2012-2022. Randomized controlled trials were taken into account. Thesystematic review followed the criteria of Roy's adaptation theory.Results: Out of the 260 articles found, 9 studies were selected for inclusion. Amultifaceted nurse-led intervention (telehealth devices, remote reminders, motivationalsessions) had demonstrated significant reductions in blood pressure (especially systolicblood pressure) in the intervention group. Nurse-led interventions also influencedhypertension awareness, self-awareness, and self-control. a positive effect on improvingmedication adherence, the Positive effects on lower salt intake, consumption of fruits andvegetables, and medication adherence were also described.Conclusions :Nurse-led nursing interventions have a positive effect on improvingmedication adherence in patients with hypertension.For patients with hypertension, futureresearch is needed to further investigate the effects of e-health, personalized activelearning, community activities, and other interventions on medication adherence. Inaddition, future studies could focus on measuring actual blood pressure and identifyingchanges associated with educational interventions.Keywords:nursing interventions;hypertension;medication adherence.
