Abstract [en]
Foreign-born workers face challenges in the workplace that impact their health and well-being, particularly in terms of communication and the work environment. Exploring the experiences of foreign-born employees in home care regarding communication can shed light on specific challenges and risks, facilitating integration and well-being through targeted interventions. Further research is needed to enhance working conditions for foreign-born workers in Sweden. This study aims to examine how foreign-born employees perceive communication in their work within home care. The study employed a qualitative, inductive approach. The sample consisted of five foreign-born individuals with a minimum of five months' experience in home care. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection, and qualitative content analysis was employed for data analysis. Three categories emerged from the findings: barriers to communication, facilitators of communication, and consequences of communication. Language difficulties, misunderstandings, and cultural differences were identified as factors hindering communication in home care, according to foreign-born employees. They emphasized the need for personal responsibility in avoiding misunderstandings and improving language skills. Support from managers and colleagues, as well as cultural awareness, were highlighted as crucial for fostering teamwork and collaboration.
