Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Covid-19 turned out to be an infectious disease that resulted in a global spread of infection. In February 2020, Covid-19 was classified as a general and socially dangerous disease in Sweden, and a month later the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared it a pandemic. This led to an extensive reorganisation of the healthcare system with a high workload. Aim: To describe nurses' experience of their mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. Method: A descriptive literature study based on 14 scientific articles with a qualitative approach. Main result: The pandemic brought a high workload with a high mortality rate that affected nurses. Nurses experienced a lack of knowledge about the disease which created anxiety, fear and stress. The nurses' work experience led to a fear of contracting the disease and infecting their loved ones. Stigmatization was experienced both at work and in private life. Despite high workloads, nurses felt that working during Covid-19 provided valuable experience and professional development. The nurses gained an increased awareness of health and their self-confidence and self-esteem was strengthened. Conclusion: Working during the Covid-19 pandemic was perceived as a difficult work situation with a lack of knowledge, high patient load and staff shortages. However, despite this, Covid-19 provided positive personal insights and professional development. The main result of this study makes it clear that more knowledge, resources, guidelines and training are necessary for healthcare professionals to manage similar situations. This can help identify factors to promote nurses' mental health in future situations.
