Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim was to investigate and describe the social support that employed women desire in their workplace during pregnancy.

Method: This study was conducted as a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who had experience of being employed during pregnancy. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Results: Based on the analysis, three categories were identified. The study results indicated that emotional support from employers and colleagues was particularly important for the social support desired by pregnant employees. Additionally, information and workplace accommodations were identified as important aspects of the desired social support.

Conclusion: Acceptance from employers and colleagues is a prerequisite for being able to work during pregnancy. Employers often lack sufficient social support for pregnant employees and should therefore improve their workplace responsibility. Employers should utilize their empathic qualities to better accommodate pregnant employees' desires for emotional support.
