Abstract [en]

The essay examines how the portrayal of Barbie as a woman has evolved over the decades in animated films. Out of the forty-two animated Barbie films released, the selection includes: “Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)”, “Barbie in a Mermaid Tale (2010)”, “Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale (2010)”, and “Barbie Princess Adventure (2020)”. The study isconducted through a qualitative content analysis consisting of two separate analyses, one narrative and one visual, focusing primarily on Barbie as a female character but also on other female supporting characters. The narrative analysis reveals a clear change in how Barbie verbally expresses herself throughout the story with both female and male characters, taking into account the years and storyline. The visual analysis also shows a distinct transformation in how Barbie is dressed and the constructed world surrounding her.
