Could school save young people from gangs? : A qualitative interview study on how teachers’ perception of the schools’ crime preventionwork against the recruitment of young people into criminal networks (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what knowledge teachers at primary schools have about crime prevention against recruitment of children and youths to criminal networks aswell as what practical actions schools take against this contemporary societal problem. Through a qualitative method, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with teachers at different primary schools. The interviews have then been analyzed with a qualitative content analysis, which then constituted the results of the study. The results have been able to be interpreted with Weber's organizational theory and also Hirschi's social bond theory. Results have established that the knowledge of crime prevention work against the recruitment of young people into criminal networks varies between different schools and teachers, but the teachers generally expressed a desire for a more comprehensive knowledge. In addition, thereis a variation in the schools’ practical work in crime prevention, where many schools collaborate with external actors in society, but the schools however, wish for strengthened support both from its own organization and from other actors.
