Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aimed to examine the perceptions and experiences of professionals in aesthetic fields regarding how cultural participation affects the mental health of young people. Interviews were conducted with six individuals working in various cultural sectors focused on children and youth, with a particular emphasis on adolescents. Data analysis was performed using thematic analysis. The results indicated that youth participating in cultural activities may experience several benefits that promote their mental health and serve as a preventive tool against mental illness. The study also suggests that significant factors influencing access to these activities include family support and socioeconomic status, which may create inequalities. Furthermore, high-performance environments, societal knowledge gaps, and economic constraints can present impediments to the establishment of conducive conditions for the mental well-being of youth, thus hindering endeavors toward sustainable development. The conclusion drawn from this study is that the significance of culture for the mental health of young people should be prioritized and not restricted. Given the extensive health benefits they offer, it is crucial to promote and support cultural activities for youth. Furthermore, the study underscores the need to create accessible and inclusive opportunities for young people to engage in such activities, which can serve as a powerful complement to school and existing interventions in supporting their well-being and development.
