Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to explore social workers' perspectives on children'sparticipation in investigations at child and youth units within Social Services in Sweden, aswell as to investigate the challenges associated with children's participation. This is adeductive qualitative study utilizing thematic content analysis conducted throughsemi-structured interviews with social workers. By utilizing Hart's theoretical framework, thefollowing themes emerged: the conditions for children's participation, different ways in whichchildren participate, and the utilization of children's participation. The results indicated thatall social workers consider children's participation crucial, but the lack of resources, particularly high workloads, results in the deprioritization of child interviews. The conclusionis that there is a need for more child interviews, and while there are opportunities for childrento have greater involvement in child welfare investigations, the responsibility for change doesnot solely rest with social workers, but also with higher authorities.
