Abstract [en]

The report focuses on a specific case of a house in Mosul, Iraq, examining its energy performance when applying Swedish building standards. The possibilities are evaluated to the assess both the advantages and disadvantages of applying these standards in a warm climate.Special attention has been paid to chapter 6 (Energy conservation) and chapter 9 (Moisture) of the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s Building Regulations (BBR). These chapter set specific requirements for hygiene, health, environment and building energy performance.By using software such as Autodesk Revit and IDA ICE, construction drawings and energy simulations were prepared for each solution to then present, compare and discuss the results using hand calculations. The study shows that a construction built according to Swedish building standards can significantly contribute to energy efficiency. Thanks to BBRs guidelines and the generous amount of insulation in the construction, energy consumption for heating and cooling can potentially decrease. However, a problem was identified from a moisture perspective. The calculations carried out by hand indicate significant risks of condensation throughout the whole wallconstruction. This, in turn, can cause water damage caused by moisture and mold problems. The report suggests installing a vapor barrier on the inside of the wall and other building components as a solution to the problem. The purpose of the hand calculations was to bolster confidence in the results obtained from energy simulations. Despite the notable differences between the calculations executed by hand and the simulation results, especially regarding transmission losses and U-values, it can be noted that the overall annual energy consumption decreases. In conclusion, it can be confirmed that the application of swedish buildning standards can indeed contribute to energy efficiency, given that certain construction design measures are taken in conjunction with the application.
