Abstract [en]
Abstract: This study aims to explore the meaningful and healing aspects of duodji, the Saami handicraft from the point of view of a duodji collector. An in-depth interview was conducted, combined with participating observation. The theoretical framework that was used in the study was based in Jungian psychology, specifically Jungian theories regarding active imagination and synchronicity. The study also included previous scholarly work on animism, as presented by Edward Tylor, it additionally included a more recent scholarly stance on animism, regarded as new animism. The study moreover explores the concept of axis mundi as presented by Mircea Eliade. This was done with the aim to include a scholarly view on the mythological and conceptual world view as understood in Saami shamanism. The hermeneutic circle was used as a method to break down the contents of the material gathered from the interview and the participating observation.
The finding in the study revealed a far-reaching and broad experience from the perspective of the duodji collector. The outcomes disclosed deeply meaningful experiences correlated to duodji collecting. The result was shown when a broad academical understanding of the Saami culture and mythology was carefully combined with in-depth practical knowledge. This was experienced by the senses in a holistic and circled manner, that put the essence of duodji in a wider context. The use of active imagination showed an increased experience of synchroneities, also known as meaningful coincidences.
