Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe health care personnels' attitudes towards adult overweight or obese patients, and to describe how these patients experience such attitudes.

Objective: Overweight has increased in the society and therefore become a public health problem. Health care personnel plays a key role in providing support and care to patients who are obese, thus attitudes regarding overweighted patients need to be considered to obstruct negative experience of health care among patients.

Methods: Scientific articles were searched in PsycINFO and Medline via Pubmed. A manual search was also carried out and a total of 17 articles, published between the years 2000 and 2007, were included for review.

Findings: Negative attitudes towards overweighted patients exist among health care personnel and difficulties were experienced in the encounter related to the fear of offending the patient. In addition, health care personnel had no trust in the patient's own ability. Patients who are overweight felt that there were negative attitudes towards overweight; this was attributed to health care personnels' lack of enthusiasm and motivation. Despite these negative attitudes, the findings showed that health care personnel and patients in some cases experience both health care and the encounter positively.

Conclusion: Existing prejudice against overweight must be prevented and patients who are overweight shuld not be treated intolerant. Both health care personnel and patients with overweight considered that knowledge about overweight were lacking among health care personnel.
