Abstract [en]

In an effort to investigate whether reduction of detailed information would increase the bias and lower the precision in age estimation 20 photographs of male faces in ages ranging from 17 to 71 years were manipulated by replacing a proportion the pixels with black colour in two steps, reduction of the original picture by 30 and 60 percent. The pictures were presented to 60 persons between 14-67 years of which 24 were female. Exposure time was at the viewer’s convenience. The viewers were requested to give their spontaneous age judgement about every picture. The performed investigation does indicate that the reduction in detailed information have some impact on systematic deviation (estimation error/bias) and reduces the precision in age estimation. This conclusion is in line with previous research.
