Abstract [sv]

Data samlades in via databaserna Medline (PubMed) och CINAHL. 16 vetenskapliga artiklar inkluderades i studiens resultat. Dessa artiklar granskades, analyserades och sammanställdes. Resultatet delades in i två huvudkategorier med tre underkategorier vardera.

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this literature study was to describe adolescent’s experiences when being afflicted with cancer and the coping strategies they use to manage their situation. Data were collected through the databases Medline (PubMed) and CINAHL. 16 articles were included in the result of this study. These articles were reviewed, analyzed and summarized. The results were divided into two main categories, with three subcategories each. The results showed that many adolescents affected by cancer felt anxiety for things like the treatment effect, the fact that they would not recover and the risk of relapse. Many of the adolescents also felt fear of death and fear caused by loss of control associated with the disease. To be left outside of their friends was a concern and it was important that friends and family saw them as normal and not as sick. Physical changes were experienced such as hair loss, weight loss/gain, being pale, pain and loss of energy. Many adolescents with cancer had a more positive outlook on life, a broader perspective and better self-esteem. To cope with the disease the adolescents used different coping strategies such as positive thoughts, reconstruction of hope, information and knowledge, social support, spiritual support, avoidance and repressive coping.
