Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe lone mothers’ experience of the contact with the Child Health Centre (CHC). The definition of CHC in the study was the Child Health Centre’s daily activities, the child health nurse and the parent groups. The study had a descriptive design and eleven lone mothers from parent forums on the internet participated. Data were collected through a question form with semi structured questions and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The result is presented in three categories: support, receiving and peer groups. In the category support lone mothers describe how they get good answers on some questions, get supported concerning the situation with the biological father and when the doctor express clumsy. Other opinions that emerged under this category was that the mothers are missing relevant answers in some questions and that they wish that the nurse had better understanding about how it is to be a lone mother. They also wanted peer groups containing only lone mothers. The category receiving described situations where the mothers feel safe and confirmed when meeting the child health nurse, but also situations where they feel insulted, for example when the mother did not want the child to have all the offered vaccinations. The last category, parent groups, showed that the mothers experienced fellowship but also had feelings of alienation in the groups.

Keywords: Lone mothers, child health centre, peer groups.
