Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe how women with eating disorders have experienced the meeting and interaction between themselves and the health care staff and how they wish to be treated.   Methods: This study has used a qualitative descriptive design and the material has been collected by interviews of a total of six persons. The collected data was analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. Results: Three categories were identified from the stories about how the meeting and interaction between the person with an eating disorder and the health care staff had been experienced, “A holistic view”, “Knowledge – an important aspect” and “The health care staff’s attitude against the person with an eating disorder”. A holistic view from the health care staff was an important matter that repeated itself in the stories. As well did the experience from the stories about the health care staff’s knowledge, which showed that good knowledge about eating disorders created feelings of security and trust to the health care staff. Another important part that has shown is how the attitude from the health care staff affects how the whole in the meeting is perceived. Committed and knowledgeable health care staff can create a positive feeling, while prejudices and ignorance can generate in a negative and uneasy experience. Conclusion: More knowledge and understanding about this area are needed, particularly in general services in health care. Further, more attention within the area of the meeting and interaction between persons with eating disorders and health care staff could inspire a further development of the current care of eating disorders. This seems to be an important part for the convalescence process.
