Abstract [sv]

Litteratursökningar gjordes i databasen Medline.

Abstract [en]

The aim of this literature study was to describe experiences of patients undergoing dialysis and awaiting kidney transplantation. Searches were carried out in the database Medline. The result of this study was based on 12 scientific articles which were reviewed, analyzed and compiled by both authors. Experiences of limitations in life due to dialysis treatment were common. Many patients suffered from fatigue and lack of energy which resulted in inactivity and difficulty managing everyday tasks. They experienced grief, anxiety and feelings of role losses. A good attitude and being seen as individuals was considered important in nursing care. Patients managed their situation with help of otherwise acceptance or hope for the future. Awaiting a kidney transplant was experienced as stressful and the waiting time was described as if life stood still. Emotions of anxiety and uncertainty were common but many lived in hope of one day undergo a transplant. In conclusion, dialysis patients are affected both physically, mentally and socially due to their treatment and awaiting a possible transplant. Therefore it is of great importance that the nurse is aware of these patients’ experiences in order to provide good and individual care.
