Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Previous studies have shown that nurses do not discuss sexuality with their patients, even though there is a need of it. The aim of this study was to describe the coronary care unit nurses attitudes regarding discussing sexuality with cardiac patients and to investigate if there are any differences between a university hospital and a district hospital and analyze correlations in attitudes for each department. Data were collected with the Swedish version of Sexuality Attitudes and Belifes Survey (SABS). Sixty-five questionnaires were distributed, of which 34 were answered. The result showed that the nurses from both hospitals were mainly positive against discussing sexuality with their patients. Correlations showed that the nurses understand that sexuality is important for patient health but takes no time to discuss sexuality with patients. The nurses, who understood that disease and treatments can affect patients´ sexuality, did not think that sexuality was too private to be discussed. Only one significant difference was discovered which showed that the nurses in one hospital to a greater extent think that sexuality should be discussed with patients without the patients´ initiative. The conclusion from the study is that there is a need of more research in the area, mainly to see what influences the attitudes to look like they do.
