Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to describe the interaction between caregivers and persons with dementia during soft touch massage and to describe the caregivers experience of what happened in the interaction. The study had a descriptive design and included two persons with dementia (two cases) and three caregivers. Each case included five observations. Data were collected through unstructured participant observations of treatments with soft touch massage and thereafter interviews with the caregivers who performed the treatment. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze data. The result which emerged in the two cases that was studied is presented each separately based on the respective themes. The theme in case 1 - To appreciate the contact but to be uncomfortable of touch - illustrates how the individuals interacted with each other during the massage and what prevented a good interaction. The theme in case 2 – From not understanding and ignore to gradually increased response and trust - reflects the development in the person with dementia´s interaction with the caregivers who performed the massage. The conclusion of the study is that soft touch massage can be a tool for interaction with some people with dementia and an obstacle in the interaction with others.
