Studien undersökte de professionellas upplevelse av vårdnadshavare med en intellektuell begränsning och deras barn, ett historiskt nytt och aktuellt ämne. Det övergripande målet var att undersöka om en vårdnadshavare med begränsning i intelligens förmådde tillgodose ett barns känslo- och beteendemässiga utveckling. Sex intervjuer med verksamma professionella inom olika verksamhetsgrenar inom socialt arbete genomfördes och bearbetades med induktiv tematisk analys. Studiens resultat utmynnade i fyra teman vilka pekade på hur svårt ämnet är och att det har en laddad karaktär. Det som skiljde de professionella åt var den egna kunskapen, vilket resulterade i hur de resonerade om samt såg på den potentiella utvecklingsmöjligheten för vårdnadshavarna. Dock fanns det en samstämmighet om att det är svårt att kompensera den känslomässiga förmågan hos vårdnadshavarna. Resultatet visade på behov av någon form av stöd till vårdnadshavare med begränsning i intelligens för att tillgodose barnets behov av att växa upp i en trygg miljö.

The research was about the professionals’ view of guardians, who had an intellectual limitation, and their children. This was a historically new and relevant subject. The overall goal with this study was to investigate whether a guardian with intellectual limitation had the capability to handle a child’s emotional and behavioral development.   Six interviews with  working professionals in various branches of social work was performed and processed with inductive thematic analysis. The results led to four themes which pointed out how difficult the subject is and that it has a loaded character. What differentiated the professionals from one another was their own experience, which resulted in how they reasoned about and looked at the potential development opportunity for the guardians. However, there was a consensus that it is difficult to compensate for the emotional character of the guardians. The results indicated a need for some sort of support for these guardians, who suffered from an intellectual limitation, in order for them to be able to provide the children with a safe environment upbringing environment.
