Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the nurses’ description of diabetes care in a general ward in medicine. An empirical study conducted with a qualitative approach and a descriptive design. The study group was nine nurses, all women with varying work experience between one and ten years, working in two different hospitals in the middle of Sweden. Main results showed that the work went well despite the fact that written procedures were missing. The nurses felt diabetes as complex disease and that their knowledge was inadequate. Contact with other caregivers and professionals professions used when the nurses felt unsure, which was experienced very positively. The patients’ knowledge and understanding of the disease was important to achieve as good a care episode as possible. The study showed that diabetes care worked fine, deficiencies in both procedures and knowledge, but the work still continued in the same way as they did before.
