Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att beskriva belgiska sjuksköterskors roll och inställning till eutanasi (dödshjälp). Metoden som valdes att användas var en beskrivande litteraturstudie med artiklar framsökta i PubMed (MedLine). Av 1632 framsökta artiklar valdes 15 relevanta artiklar med kvalitativ eller kvantitativ ansats ut. Resultatet visade att de viktigaste delarna i sjuksköterskans roll vid eutanasi är, förutom att tillgodose patientens omvårdnadsbehov, att stödja patienten och anhöriga samt organisera allt det praktiska.  Att vara involverad i beslutsprocessen är något som sjuksköterskorna tyckte var mycket viktigt. Sjuksköterskorna ansåg att eutanasifrågan är svår och komplicerad och att varje individuellt fall är unikt. En god kommunikation inom vårdteamet och tillsammans med patienten samt tydliga riktlinjer för eutanasi gör processen lättare för sjuksköterskan. Slutsatsen vi kan dra från studien är att eutanasi är ett komplext ämne som präglas av etiska och moraliska frågor som aldrig blir färdig diskuterade. Många sjuksköterskor känner sig osäkra i frågan. Utbildning och god teamanda ser sjuksköterskorna som viktiga förutsättningar för detta arbete.

The aim of this literature review is to describe roles and attitudes towards euthanasia amongst Belgian nurses. The method used was a descriptive design, of the 1632 hits, 15 was identified via PubMed (MedLine) and then analyzied. Both qualitative and quantitative aspects were included. The result shows that one of the most important parts of the nurse's role in euthanasia, besides serving the patient’s need for care, is to support both the patient and the relatives and organize things of practical nature. To be involved in the decision-making process is something that the nurse finds very important. Most nurses describe the euthanasia issue as difficult and complex, and every case is unique. Efficient communication within the team and with the patient, and clear guidelines for euthanasia, makes the process easier for the nurses to handle. The conclusion of the study is that euthanasia is a complex issue. Many nurses declare feelings of insecurity when handling this matter. Education and support from the team members are important factors for the nurse in the care of a patient undergoing euthanasia. Euthanasia is a controversial subject with many ethical and moral questions involved that will be subject to never-ending discussions.
