Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe how the school health nurse reflects about their work with sex and relationships among school students. The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study with descriptive design. The interviews were conducted with ten school nurses and the material was analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The results of the study resulted in three categories Collaboration facilitates sex and relationships work, challenges in work with sex and relationships and too little sex education in the school nurse's mandatory work. School nurses stated that they wanted more cooperation with biology teachers and counselors, and that they wanted more time for sex and relationships education in classes. They also described an experience of cooperation with the staff of youth centers in the municipalities worked fine. School nurses felt that they were in sex education efforts faced challenges every day, because students' knowledge differed. Much of students' knowledge was acquired via the Internet and school nurses felt that this knowledge did not always corresponds with reality. School nurses felt that sex education should be brought forward, and be continuous over time; it would be included in several grades beyond grade six and eight. The mandatory work on sex and relationships experienced by school nurses is too little to do prevention work in the lower classes.
