Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The stoma has both a physical andpsychological effect on sexual life. Through the abdominalwall an opening is constructed surgically where the faeces is discharged andcollected in a bag. There are many different reasons why people need to undergo ostomy surgery. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe how people with ostomy living in a relationship experience their sexual life afterstoma surgery and their strategies to make it work. Method: A literature review with a descriptive design. The result is based on nine scientific articles with qualitativeapproach. Results: The results are reported asthemes: body image, partnership and the sexual act. In moments of intimacy the stomacarrier hides their stoma both for their own and for the partner´s sake. Stoma carriers prefer some sexual positions before others. Getting a stoma -underpinned a sense of humiliation and not feeling sexy. Conclusion: The majority of participants reported that their sexlife has changed for the negative after ostomy surgery. Sexuality is one of life´s most intimate andprivate sides and all do not feel comfortable talkingabout it openly. By describing the stoma carriers practical strategies to a functioning sex life, the authors provide the nurse with more knowledge to help meet ostomy patients in the specific field.
