Abstract [en]

In the age group 16-25 years, the Internet is the most powerful source of information. This age group is also the main user of social media. The purpose of this study was to investigate young people's experience of social media and any associations between social media and adolescents health by answering the questions: ”how does young people use social media”, ”what risks can occur in young people's use of social media” and ”how can social media influence young people's lifestyles”. The survey was conducted by a quantitative cross-sectional study using questionnaires. The sample consisted of 45 second year social science high school pupils, of which 14 were girls and 31 were boys. The results showed that all participants used social media, all but one several times a day. All had daily access to the Internet primarily through their own computers and smartphones. Girls turned out to experience slightly more risk factors associated to health through social media than boys. Only a small proportion experienced that they had changed their lifestyle habits because of information transmitted through social media.
