Am I allowed to choose? : A study on customer´s experience of freedom of choice (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Elderly care in Sweden has changed over time. A development that has occurred has led to that system of freedom of choice is common for individuals in need of the elderly care. The elderly has gone from care users to become customer´s on a market. The purpose of this essay was to examine whether customers in need of home care experience that they have a real choice in a system of choice. We conducted a qualitative interview study with six individuals who are granted efforts under the Social Services Act, SoL (2001:453). The results show that respondents in our study felt that they had a real choice. The empirical data showed factors that were relevant to the customer´s attitude to their choice. Customers who lacked social support in the choice situations experienced more difficulties to deal with their own choice. The written information was another factor that was perceived difficult to deal with as it was given in excessive quantity. Customer´s own resources of social and cultural capital were relevant to how they valued their freedom of choice.
