What motivates volunteers : to work within leisure and health (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to determine what motivates those who volunteer to work within leisure and health and to see if the motivation changes depending on how long the volunteer has been active. A web-survey with questions from Volunteer functions inventory (VFI) and Basic need satisfaction at work scale (BNS) was sent to 220 volunteers to get the answers to: Which motivational factors are best fulfilled among the volunteers and do they change over time? The result showed that according to the VFI, Values, the selflessness aspect of individuals, Understanding, the seeking of new knowledge, and Enhancement, the self-Development, are scored the highest. According to the result of the BNS, Competence, the understanding and being a part of your environment, and Connectedness, the wish to belong to a social environment, are the needs that are best fulfilled. The time spent as a volunteer has, according to the VFI, no connection to the motivational factors but the results from the BNS showed that with time all factors decreased - Connectedness decreasing the most. Actions to keep the motivation amongst volunteers over time are discussed.
