School counselor in the multicultural school : A qualitative study of school counselors work with newly arrived students (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aimed to examine school counselors experiences of working with newly arrived students. To fulfill the purpose, five qualitative interviews with school counselors were conducted. The school counselor profession is covered by a large degree of discretion, but it was limited by various organizational limitations, mainly the lack of resources in schools. Which resulted in an excessive number of students per school counselor, which led to a lack of time in their work. The school counselors had a holistic perspective in their work with the students, by paying attention to both the psychological and social needs. The most prominent need of the students were the need to acquire the swedish language. To meet the needs of the children the school counselors worked on an individual, group and community level. This study also showed that it was important to collaborate with other professions and a special understanding in form of cultural competence was needed.
