Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate what Swedish preschool teachers say about their ways of supporting the children's development of literacy and what they say about their ways of noticing the children's interests. A sociocultural perspective has been used as a theoretical interpretation tool throughout the study. Seven preschool teachers from six different preschools in a Swedish city have been interviewed and the results show that the different preschool teachers focus on literacy on different levels, but that all of them work with supporting the children's literacy development in some way. Most of them work with a specific reading project, designed to increase the number of hours the children listen to adults reading aloud, and also the number of hours the children read books themselves in the longer run, throughout their school years. The preschool teachers could also give examples of their methods of noticing the children's interests, and also, in some cases, how they planned pedagogical activities based on this. The results of the study were then divided into different thematic areas and discussed, which led to conclusions. The most important conclusion of the study was that the preschool teachers seemed to respect the interests of the children in more ways than they were aware of themselves.
