Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among young people : Effects of gender and education in the aspiration of life goals (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Motivation is a key factor for all institutions of the society for the study of individuals and knowing how to best motivate them and increase a healthy life. Previous studies show that there are both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that drive a person and that intrinsic motivation is linked to higher well-being. Intrinsic motivation involves factors such as personal development and helping others. In contrast, extrinsic motivation includes material things, status and money. This study was based on the survey Aspiration Index with participants who studied last year of high school and university. The purpose was to investigate whether there was any difference between men and women regarding life goals, and if there was any difference in life goals between high school and university students. The results showed that women, more than men, are motivated by both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors and that high school students are motivated by external factors compared to university students.
