    Abstract [en]

The overall aim was to study transgender persons’ experiences of, and reactions upon, attitudes and social norms in relation to their gender identity. Another question that was relevant to answer was how transgender persons are affected by the hetero norm. The method used to collect data was through questionnaires published on the internet. The only requirement to participate was to be a transgender over 18 years old, and when the survey closed, 35 respondents had answered it. The questionnaire consisted of both quantitative and qualitative questions. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.

The results indicate that transgender persons living conditions are largely affected by norms, and that they encounter a considerable amount of negative attitudes due to their gender identity. To "pass" as either man or woman turned out to be something that made it easier for transgender people to evade negative attitudes.

One hope is that this study can provide knowledge to different instances in the community to open up to be more open to critical thinking around norms.

The conclusion was that persons with a transgender identity are affected by societal norms and by heteronormativity. It takes a lot of courage to be able to be one self but everything boils down to how strong a person are and the availability of support and role models in the surrounding society.

Islamic Feminism in Iran: Feminism in a New Islamic Context2006In: Journal of feminist studies in religion, ISSN 8755-4178, E-ISSN 1553-3913, Vol. 22, no 2, p. 33-54Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Challenging the clergy’s monoclinic interpretational power, Islamic feminists in Iran, by emphasizing the historical context of the holy texts and reformulating Islamic concepts and law from a “feminist” perspective, are developing a new direction in rethinking gender in Islam. By opening the doors of interpretation of sacred texts and debates on women issues to other groups than Muslims, they have braked with reactive gender conservatism and West phobia prevailing among fundamentalists, and have embarked on connecting themselves with Western feminism and weaving new textual connections between Muslim women and Western feminism.

Senare års bild av den muslimska kvinnan i gymnasieskolans läromedel2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Genusperspektiv i naturvetenskaplig undervisning2006In: Naturfagsdidaktikkens mange facetter: Proceedings fra Det 8. nordiske Forskersymposium om undervisningen i naturfag / [ed] Lisbeth Bering, Jens Dolin, Lars Brian Krogh, Jan Sölberg, Helene Sörensen, Rie Troelsen, Köpenhamn: Danmarks Paedagogiska Universitets Forlag , 2006, p. 95-102Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Gender theory as a tool for analyzing science teaching2009In: Teaching and Teacher Education: An International Journal of Research and Studies, ISSN 0742-051X, E-ISSN 1879-2480, Vol. 25, no 2, p. 336-343Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines to what extent experienced teachers are aware of gender issues in the science classroom. It also explores how an introduction to gender theory might alter this awareness. Teachers wrote their reflections about a real classroom situation. They were then asked to analyse the same situation after having read texts that discussed gender theory concepts. The fourteen teachers' understanding about gender and society were challenged. Some teachers were able to analyse the case differently by applying gender theory, others discussed the case on a more general level, while one teacher showed signs of resistance regarding gender theory.

I frysboxen: Hur bevakningen av dam- och herridrott skiljer sig åt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Synen på Män i förskolan: En genusstudie2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Women in sustainability research: Examining gender authorship differences in peer-reviewed publications2022In: Frontiers in Sustainability, ISSN 2673-4524, no 3, article id 959438Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Higher education institutions (HEIs) have been undertaking considerable efforts to embed sustainability into their system; however, there have been limited studies on the incorporation of sustainability into research. In parallel, it has been found that women have an important role in contributing to sustainability since they are more engaged and have a more holistic perspective on sustainability than men. These two phenomena have resulted in limited studies about the contribution of women to sustainability research (i.e., in scientific publishing). A bibliometric analysis of more than 39,000 documents (with 147,090 authorships) was done to fill this gap, focusing on sustainability peer-review publications in Europe between 2015 and 2020. The results show that women's presence in sustainability research has been increasing during the last years; however, there are still few female authorship publications, even in fields that have been traditionally women-oriented. In addition, their publications have been less recognized by the scientific community. The results also show substantial gender differences in terms of author leadership, where female senior researchers are more likely to mentor female junior researchers than men. Female researchers tend to collaborate nationally, but they could improve their international collaboration since this can improve their research and impact. More support should be provided to female researchers to help foster women's sustainability engagement and holistic perspectives, reduce existing negative feedback loops, and increase positive ones. Achieving gender equality is sine qua non in achieving sustainable societies.

Exploring new waters for sustainability: gender equality in European seaports2021Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ports have been working towards becoming more sustainable. Although gender equality (SDG5) is very important within the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, it is ranked almost at the bottom of port priorities. The aim of this research is to provide insights into how ports have been addressing gender equality in their efforts to contribute to sustainability. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with directors and sustainability managers from six European countries. The responses from interviewees were analysed using Grounded Theory’s constant comparative analysis.

The findings show that European ports have engaged in measures aimed at contributing to sustainability through gender equality classified in five stages: (1) Gender segregation, which needs to be overcome, and is, in many cases, the starting point; (2) Compliance with national laws and regulation, e.g. in recruitment and salaries; (3) Gender equity, reducing barriers to entry and compensate for the historical and social disadvantages that women had previously suffered from; (4) Gender equality, guaranteeing the equal treatment of men and women in all processes; and (5) More sustainable ports. Achieving gender equality is a sine qua non to make ports more sustainable, i.e. integrating social issues of sustainability with economic and environmental ones. Internal and external forces affect each of the stages, where thrust forces help ports reduce gender segregation and advance towards becoming more sustainability and drag forces slow or block the efforts and may lead to returning to a previous stage. The findings were used to develop a “Gender equality for sustainability in ports” framework.

This research is especially related to SDG5, target 5.1 (End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere), and 5.5 (Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life).

Ports, and other traditionally male-dominated industries, could capitalise on women’s holistic perspective and higher engagement to better contribute to accelerating the progress to make Europe more sustainable, especially in these testing times.

    Abstract [en]

Ports have increasingly been addressing sustainability issues; however, gender equality has been a low priority in such efforts. This paper is aimed at providing insights into how ports have been addressing gender equality to contribute to sustainability. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with top-level port managers from six European countries. Klimatanpassningars inverkan på jämställdhet: En kvalitativt jämförande textanalys av Stockholms, Göteborgs och Malmös översiktsplaner2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Statistics show that the suicide rate amongst men is high and that men do not seek professional help in the same extent as women. Previous research suggests that the reason behind this may have to do with masculinity norms, expressing that men must be mentally and physically strong and have the ability to deal with problems on their own. The aim of this study is to investigate young men’s attitude to seek counselling for mental health problems and what impact they think masculinity norms has on the willingness to seek counselling.

Interviews with six young men show that our results are consistent with previous research in terms of the negative impact masculinity norms have on men’s general approach towards counselling. The young men’s attitude is however positive towards counselling. They suggested that counselling could be normalized through more information and expanded outreach strategies. Our conclusion is that men are positive towards counselling despite masculinity norms.

"Drag Queens Talk Like Women, You Know": A Study in the Use of the hedge "You Know" in feminine-gendered Speech2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the use of the verbal hedge "you know" in the spontaneous speech of women and drag queens to compare for instances of certainty and uncertainty as described by Holmes (1986). For the data, episodes of the reality shows RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked which airs on Logo TV and The Real Housewives of Orange County which airs on Bravo TV were manually transcribed by the conventions of written speech. The use of "you know" was then analyzed by function and context. In the results of this study, the women used "you know" to express uncertainty more often than the drag queens, except not in the way Lakoff (2004) described as being an aspect of "women’s language." The drag queens used "you know" more often to express certainty. However, when used to express uncertainty its use by the drag queens was more relevant to "women’s language" as described by Lakoff (2004) or an exaggerated performance of femininity.

Constituting the Healthy Employee?: Governing gendered subjects in workplace health promotion2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

With a post-structural approach and an analytical focus on processes of governmentality and biopower, this study is concerned with how discourses of health are contextualized in educational practice and interaction between educators and participants in workplace health promotion (WHP) interventions. Of concern are issues of the discursive production, regulation and representation of power, knowledge and subjects as gendered beings in workplace health promotion interventions. The methods for generating data are participant observation, interviews and gathering of documentation pertaining to four different workplace health promotion interventions. Based on these data, the thesis offers an analysis of the health discourses drawn on in the interventions and the technologies of power and of the self by which the participants are governed and invited to govern themselves in the name of health. It also asks what practices and positions that thus come to be made available or not to the participants. Two health discourses are identified: the biomedical discourse and the wellness discourse. Both discourses are drawn on in all four studied interventions, the biomedical discourse being the dominating discourse drawn on. The biomedical discourse is informed by scientific ‘facts’ and statistics and is underpinned by a notion of risk. The wellness discourse is informed by an understanding of health as a subjective embodied experience and is underpinned by a notion of pleasure. Drawing on these discourses, the responsibility for health is placed with the participants and the healthy participant/employee is constituted as a rationally motivated risk-avoider and disciplined pleasure seeker who is both willing and able to actively make ‘good’ choices regarding their lifestyle. Furthermore, and informed by essentialist and heteronormative ideas about gender, the ideal healthy person is modelled on a male norm, representing women as the deviant Other.

Troubling the Notion of the ‘Stone Age’ in Health Promotion: a gender analysis2012In: AARE-APERA 2012, 2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes and discusses how gender is constituted in a Swedish workplace health promotion intervention which focused on diet and physical activity, through the resources of what we have called a ‘Stone Age’ discourse. The paper draws on material gathered for a larger study that examined how discourses of health are contextualized in educational practice and interaction between educators and participants in four different workplace health promotion interventions. The purpose of the interventions was to help employees change (improve) their lifestyle as concerns dietary and physical activity habits. Data was collected for the original study by ethnographic methods such as participation observation of the interaction between educators and participants. Foucault’s ideas about governmentality were utilized in analyzing the interactions in order to investigate how health discourses were drawn on and the technologies of power and of the self by which the participants were governed and invited to govern themselves in the name of health. From these analyses, various discourses were identified on which the participants and particularly the educators drew to constitute the healthy employee. One of these was a discourse, which in this paper is called a ‘Stone Age’ discourse, because of the ways in which the differences in men and women’s health were explained in its most overt form by reference to women as gatherers and men as hunters, with men as a result positioned as the physically, emotionally and mentally ideal and women as the problematic and lacking ‘Other’. While this discourse, in this form, may be unique to Scandinavian countries, this paper will nevertheless indicate how this notion corresponds to ideas from evolutionary theory and medicine in international research on health and wellness. This paper will also discuss the implications of such ideas about health and gender for interventions aimed at changing behavior and lifestyles. The paper will provide a discussion of the specific rationalities, truths and techniques that informed the 'Stone Age' discourse, as these contributed to shaping desires, actions and beliefs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine if and how victims of domestic violence disclose their experiences to their social network, how the social network responds to the violence and the significance of the network responses relative to the evolvement of the violence. The study is based on five semi-structured interviews with women who have been exposed to different forms of domestic violence. The results, which were analysed using a narrative analysis and interpreted by symbolic interactionism and the theory of the leaving process, shows that women disclose their experiences about domestic violence to both informal and formal contacts. Disclosure often happened in the aftermath of a serious violent incident. In the majority of cases, women experienced supportive reactions that also contributed to the final break up from their relationships. Some of the women, however, experience negative attitudes and rejection, in these situations an absolute break-up was not completed.

    Abstract [en]

Through qualitative interviews with five employees in the Swedish correctional system and one trans-identified inmate, I sought to get an understanding of transgender inmates are dealt with in the Swedish correctional system. The aim of this study was to examine norms, values and practices expressed by the interview participants regarding transgender inmates. The interview participants expressed an awareness of the group’s vulnerable position in the prison environment, but also the lack of guidelines as well as structured methods to handle the group. Responses focused on the deviant and direct rather than the normative and preventive. The transgendered inmates themselves were responsible to explain their identity to others. At the same time there were no efforts to make the staff members aware of questions concerning gender identities and/or expressions. The Swedish correctional system can be said to maintain normative conceptions of two binary sexes by failing to provide action plans or natural options for persons with gender identities that extend beyond woman or man, or fluctuate between the two categories. To refuse to take a stand is to exercise power, make transgender inmates invisible, and perhaps even be seen as a violation in itself.

Me too! A case study of gendered victimization and feminist development in a Swedish peer support organization for people with experiences of criminalization and substance abuse2022In: Frontiers in Psychiatry, E-ISSN 1664-0640, Vol. 13, article id 937228Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Even if peer support is commonly defined as horizontal in contrast to the more hierarchical relationship between client and professional, peer support is not free from power dynamics. This article considers feminist organizing in the context of peer support for people with experiences of criminalization and substance abuse and addresses questions of (un)equal peer support, sexual victimization, (re)integration, and organizational change in the #MeToo era.Drawing on qualitative interviews with support organization representatives and discussion material from a study circle and a men’s group, this article analyses one organization’s framing of, and responses to, allegations of sexual victimization of female members, and their ongoing work toward increased equality. The study shows that a number of measures have been taken in the organization in order to give voice to women whose lives are affected by crime, imprisonment, violence, and drug abuse. Interview participants put strong emphasis on the need to counteract what is described as a“macho culture” embedded in the peer support organization (PESO), which is seen as repeating structures of masculinity and power from the previous criminal lifestyle as well as reproducing specific gendered vulnerabilities. The organization’s patriarchal structure is understood as connected to a culture of silence that has allowed for sexism and marginalization of female members to continue. The women’s lived experiences of trauma within peer support practices and their struggles to redefine the foundations of their organization emphasizes the lived gendered emotionality of peer support, and uncovers how power structures can be challenged by putting the gendered lived experiences of women with a history of criminalization and substance abuse in the center of ex-offender peer support.

Adjustment of Somali women in relation to societal systems in the Swedish society: A qualitative case study of five Somali women’s experiences2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aims of this study are; (a) to explore how Somali women experience their adjustment in the Swedish society in connection to societal systems, and (b) to investigate these women’s perspective of how to make the adjustment process more effective in respect to their needs. The adjustment of the participants has been investigated through a social ecological theoretical framework. Thematic analysis has been utilised to present three themes; assistance, inclusion and self-sufficient which are discussed using social ecological theoretical perspective. Results showed that lack of assistance and sufficient information has led to these women feeling helpless and lost motivation to adjust. The women showed disappointment with regard to self-sufficiency which has not been what they have expected. The suggestions made by the interviewees included assistance in their native language during their first years in the new country, inclusive opening of meeting places and an increased assessment of personal resources when receiving help to find employment. Making adjustment more effective for newly arrived immigrants in new countries is fundamental to international social work.

Gamla bilder, nya identiteter: En queerteoretisk analys av samtida tolkningar och användningar av bilder, berättelser och föreställningar om fornskandinavisk religion2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Gudinnan och kvinnligheten: En feministisk analys av språket kring kön, kropp och kvinnlighet inom samtida svensk gudinnereligiositet2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Populism, Democracy, and the Humanities: Interdisciplinary Explorations and Critical Enquiries2022Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this volume, twelve Sweden-based researchers reflect on the phenomenon and concept of populism in relation to democracy and the humanities from the multiple vantage points of various disciplinary backgrounds: philosophy, history of ideas, media and communication, journalism, political science, gender studies, organization science, education theory, popular culture, and literary studies. While the study of populism has attracted a lot of attention in political science, this topic has been rarely explored by scholars in the humanities. Rather than contribute to the already established area of populism studies in social and political sciences, our authors take a more open and exploratory stance through which they attempt to open up new fields and directions for inquiry from an interdisciplinary humanistic perspective.

Tro, kön och kärlek: en undersökning av fyra prästers uppfattningar om Svenska kyrkans beslut om att viga samkönade par2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Does Politics Trump Gender?: A Study of Linguistic Features Among American Voters During the 2016 Presidential Election2017Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay, the usage of several linguistic features of 13 members of a televised political discussion are studied. The members of the discussion were private citizens, and not political experts. This particular discussion was filmed during the 2016 American presidential election, just before the second national debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The studied linguistic features are: hedges, tag-questions, interaction and humor. By categorizing the members in three categories; age, gender and politics, this essay is able to investigate the results of the televised discussion by each category, and compare them to each other. The central question of the essay is if gender is a bigger divide regarding these linguistic features, than political views. The result shows that while gender still is the biggest divide regarding hedges, there are some specific elements where politics seems to trump gender.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how Gävle newspapers Arbetarbladet and Gefle Dagblad produce female and male politicians in their editorials. Articles from November 20, 2015 - January 20, 2016, were analyzed by quantitative content analysis and accompanying text analysis. During this period there was a historical and talked about change of power in Gävle City Council. The results of the study showed that Gefle Dagblad only wrote about the male municipal members and Arbetarbladet about the women. The results also showed that the newspaper Gefle Dagblad wrote about the male politicians slightly more in their articles. These are interesting results because the majority of writers in Gefle Dagblad were women.

Berit Ås theory of the suppression techniques ridicule and invisibility was mainly used in the analysis of the material. We have also used Gunilla Jarlbros theory about how male dominance is maintained in journalism.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to study how Swedish text- based media constructed their portrayal of victims suffering from criminal violence and also to see if there were any gender differences in these portrayals. The study was made by using a qualitative content analysis based on 24 newspaper articles from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. The analysis and coding took support from Butler’s gender- theory and Christie’s “ideal type victim”- theory. The analysis resulted in multiple similarities and differences between the female- and male victims. The greatest similarity was the portrayal of the victims as legitimate, although none of the 24 cases fell under the most stereotypical portrait of a crime- victim. The most interesting difference in the results was that the men’s obtained legitimate and dignity despite several showed some kind of doubtful lifestyle.

    Abstract [en]

The silent years: ecofeminism in Swedish printed press 1995-2016

Ecofeminism figures in both political and philosophical contexts and is an ideology that combines feminism with environmental policy. It builds its ideology to counteract a patriarchal oppression against both women and nature, saying that this oppression stems from a historical perception of the woman standing closer to nature. The self-elevation of the white man to God during the industrialism era used this historical image in the justification to exercise power towards both women and nature, which is said to be ongoing to the greatest extent today. By considering how Swedish printed press depict ecofeminism between the years 1995-2016, this paper has been designed to determine if this relationship of power remains and define how it is expressed. The essay also investigates whether a discourse on ecofeminism is mediated in Swedish press.

Central Issues: How is ecofeminism produced in Swedish printed press between 1995 and 2016? What power structures appear around ecofeminism and who get their voices heard? Why was nothing written about ecofeminism for 5 of the 11 investigated years?

Methods: To find this out, this essay has used triangulation as an overarching method containing quantitative analysis, content analysis and analysis of visual communication.

Conclusions: This essay indicate that the repression remains and becomes evident in the relationship between Swedish press and ecofeminism. Ecofeminism is expressed as difficult for the public and is often confused with specificity feminism in what appears to be a strategic goal of repression by means of disinformation.

Tills döden skiljer oss åt …: tre olika perspektiv på kristen rådgivningslitteratur för äktenskapet2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    • Vilka egenskaper tillskrivs kvinnan respektive mannen i litteraturen?

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about how the aesir are used as an ideal image of the original Nordic aspects and as a symbol of heroism and pure strength. The main subject of this essay is to look at how this ideal of masculinity is represented in the art produced during the era of romantic nationalism. The choice of focusing on this era in particular is made due to the fact that it was during this time that the modern images of the aesir and the Vikings were made. The purpose of this study is to examine how the ideal of masculinity reflects upon the artistic interpretations of the Norse mythology in a selected group of art work produced during the 1800’s. Further more research is done in order to look for the possible political messages that could be connected to these works of art.

The writing of this essay has meant a search for facts in books concerning romantic nationalism, Norse mythology and interpretation of Norse mythology, and finally depiction of the Norse mythology in the romantic nationalistic art during the 19th century.  This work has been combined with analyses of a selected number of works of art produced during the 1800’s. Some limitations have been done in selecting this art, considering the year of completion and the motif. Due to these limitations, all of the selected works were made within the time of the 19th century and depict male gods of the Norse mythology.

Following conclusions can be made from this study: (1) that during periods of the 19th century the aesir were seen as strong warriors with a clearly Nordic origin; (2) this ideology was expressed in different ways in the art of the time and was later on also used by the racial ideological sciences.

Virtual Invisible Men: privacy and invisibility as forms of privilege in online venues for fathers during early parenthood2014In: Culture, Society and Masculinities, ISSN 1941-5583, E-ISSN 1941-5591, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 52-68Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Given the proliferation of support technology for men entering parenthood in virtual forums this project’s aim was to explore a virtual forum exclusively for fathers and elaborate on gendered questions for men’s parenthood within that milieu. An archival forum study was undertaken using principles for nethnography. The categories presented in the results overall indicate that the online venue creates a privileged invisibility from experiences in “real life” gender relations. This suggests that both horizontal and vertical homo-social dimensions are present in the forum support/negotiations which occur among the forum posters, whereby issues of invisibility and entitlement in some cases take a central position. We suggest that being virtual invisible men entails participation in both a marketplace of opinions and a homo-social competition.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse modern video games from a feministic perspective. How much misogyny is there and how will it be portrayed. To get the answers we seek we have phrased this into a single, broad question we aim to study. To do this we have decided to use a qualitative content analysis for the purpose of being able to play and experience a modern game we have picked out, Elden Ring, in an authentic setting and analyse what it is we see on the screen.

We have used tokenism and ageism to use as a foundation for our study and to back up our theories which are feminist film studies and gender studies. The reason behind this decision is to see how media designs their female oriented characters. We will specifically study how gender is portrayed in Elden Ring which, despite everything, is still a progressive game in modern society.

The results of our study showed that even a modern game like Elden Ring falls into traps of sexism and misogyny. The game itself is far from as bad as it could have been when you’re able to create your own female character with features such as different ethnicities and even body hair. Many of the female characters are written with their own agendas in mind and their stories isn’t centred around a man in their lives. One of the traps they fall into however is that female characters in media is often designed as young and beautiful and as such they remind of each other and at first glance it can be hard to tell who’s who. The male characters in comparison have much more variates in their designs both regarding appearance and age.

The game puts the other characters in a role as passive supports and only one out of 19 main bosses you fight are female. It is important to note that, as the player, you must collect certain runes to advance in the story. These runes are usually found after you defeat a boss who is a demigod. The female character does not have that status. She was merely gifted her rune from her demigod ex-husband.

Den problematiska machokulturen: en undersökning av vägen mot att bli en "riktig man"2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper has aimed to investigate and interpret how widespread macho culture is at Thorén framtid junior high school in Växjö and to investigate what kind of relevant criminological consequences a widespread macho culture can have. The material analyzed has been collected through interviews with staff at the school. The results showed that the macho culture exists, which is primarily shown through an idealization of physical strength and the use of words that allude to a person's gender or sexuality. The criminological consequencesthat were identified were primarily the risk of exclusion which in turn could lead to criminal acts. It turned out that there was a strong awareness of the problems with macho culture and early efforts were requested to counteract the problem.

Lärares medvetna val av högläsningsbok: Med fokus på genusmedvetenhet2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Jämställd text: En genuskritisk textanalys av fem texter från Region Gävleborgs hemsida2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to analyze delinquency in Uppsala regarding types of crime, neighborhoods and gender, as well as to study whether there was any correlation between delinquency and socioeconomics. By using data on suspected youths in the age of 13-20 in Uppsala, we did a univariate and bivariate statistical analysis. To study the relationship between the neighborhood structure and frequency of suspected youths we first used a correlation matrix and then proceeded with a multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that there are similarities and differences regarding delinquency of boys and girls. The most distinct difference was the frequency of suspected youths. Regarding the regression analysis, the socioeconomics explains a relatively large part of the variance of frequencies of suspected youths.

Pojke eller flicka? Individ!: En kvantitativ enkätstudie om genus och könskränkningar i förskolan2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The paradox of globalization: exploitation or empowerment of women?2022In: The paradox of globalization: exploitation or empowerment of women?, 2022Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study analyzes the Paradox of Globalisation. We investigate if Globalisation leads to empowerment or to exploitations of women. Research show globalization contributes to higher incomes for less developed economies, democratizes institutions, cultivates cultural richness and develops employment for women. Additionally, there are negative effects of globalization if the cultural context of people is not considered and globalization is controversial. We view the paradox of globalization as twofold having consequences on women empowerment and exploitation. It is assumed gender equality can improve women conditions and opportunities, advances their careers and enhances participation in democratic decision-making, by giving freedom of speech to all about problems in factory work. Based on a study from Bangladesh garment industry we analyze the influence of globalization on women empowerment. We conducted a qualitative study and structured interviews with 39 women workers in six factories and use a grounded theory approach to analyse the data. Preliminary results of the study show contextual factors affect the working conditions of women in the factories negatively. Female workers are not satisfied with the salaries they get, they are not allowed to use the money they earn by themselves and they do not have the possibility to participate in decision-making and advance in careers. The paradox is female workers still can support their families and their children and got the possibility to buy more and healthier food. The study suggests if institutional factors are considered, globalization can make a positive contribution by empowering women and improving the quality of decision-making.

Kvinnan i kristendomen: En analys av tre läromedel utifrån ett genusteoretiskt perspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I vilka situationer nämns kvinnan specifikt?
