Sustainability reporting as a way to foster entrepreneurial universities2018In: Proceedings of the 25th Annual EurOMA Conference - To Serve, to Produce and to Servitize in the Era of Networks, Big Data and Analytics, Budapest, June 24-26, 2018., 2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a major role in the development of societies. In the last decades, there has been an increasing interest on the commercialisation of knowledge by universities for economic development that lead to the emergence of the term “Entrepreneurial University”. This study aims to report the sustainability efforts of the University of Gävle, Sweden by applying a systematic tool, Graphical Assessment of Sustainability in Universities (GASU). This study highlights sustainability reporting as a way to improve communication practices between universities and stakeholder. The systematic and holistic assessment of HEIs gives insights of collaboration opportunities and by that foster their entrepreneurial journey.

I barn och ungas ögonhöjd: En checklista från barn till plan för detaljplanering2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study has examined how teachers from three integrated secondary schools – one which provides education for students with special needs and two vocational schools –define violence. The definitions have been linked to whether the schools tend to display a workplace environment perspective or a crime perspective on violence, and how these perspectives are expressed. These perspectives constitute one of the theories that the study is based on, along with Nils Christie’s the Ideal Victim and Ron Akers’ Differential Reinforcement. Interviews have been held with three teachers from the vocational schools and four teachers from the school for students with special needs. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed from a perspective of qualitative content analysis. Conclusively the results show that while all teachers include physical violence in their own definitions of violence, and most of them include psychological violence, the specific actions that are included in their concepts of violence differ. However, we found that the way they “choose” which actions are to be included in their concepts consists among all teaches. They all seem to “choose” from a combination of the expectations on them set by the organization and to what extent the action can be perceived as an “ideal crime”.

”Det är ett hantverk att utreda mord”: En kvalitativ studie om utredningsmässiga svårigheter (och möjligheter) kopplade till dödligt våld i kriminella miljöer2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what investigative difficulties are associated with investigations of lethal violence in criminal environments. We wanted to investigate which factors tend to complicate the work for Polismyndigheten. Furthermore, we discussed the consequences that the low rate of resolved cases has on society and how it's connected to crime prevention. The material was gathered from five semi-structured interviews and the result from these was analyzed with previous studies on the subject as well as rational choice theory, broken windows theory and organizational learning theory. The result showed that difficulties related to lack of resources was a clear theme in all the interviews. This is primarily connected to a need for more investigators in the relevant sections as well as a broader set of skills, knowledge and experience distributed over the entire workforce. Furthermore, the study showed that there is a problem regarding getting witnesses to give their statements to the police during investigations of lethal violence in criminal environments. Finally, greater legal possibilities regarding surveillance were identified as a part of the result.

    Abstract [en]

On the 1st of July 2020 a new increase in the severity of a penalty gained legal effect. This means that a crime where the motive is honour-related is supposed to be seen as an aggravating circumstance. The purpose with our study is to examine the difference between how the court and prosecutor motivates and argue around the motive before and after the increased penalty. The method we chose was a qualitative content analysis and we chose the sentences with a criteria-driven selection. The theories that we chose were the ideal victim and cultural criminology. Our analysis resulted in a few patterns: need of control from the perpetrator and assault. Our conclusion is that both the court and the prosecutor before the increased penalty took the honour-related motive into account because they saw the crime as especially ruthless.

    Abstract [sv]

Ensuring elderly mobility: environmental and safety issues2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of the issues of safe mobility ‎for the elderly population in Sweden. ‎This is achieved first by assessing the geography and patterns of ‎elderly falls at the county level and then by conducting a detailed survey with residents in senior ‎housing to investigate the relationship between indoor and/or outdoor environmental ‎characteristics and elderly safety. Safety is regarded as a multidimensional concept that ‎involves risk of falls, crime victimization and elderly people’s perception of their ‎overall safety. Using a case study approach, the study also assesses the types of outdoor places where most crimes ‎against the elderly take place and the types of places most feared by them. The study ‎adapts a set of qualitative and quantitative methods ‎to capture the nature of the phenomena; trends, patterns and frameworks that support ‎the analysis and implications of the results for both research and practice. The findings show ‎that elderly falls in Sweden vary geographically and exhibit gender, age, environmental, and socio-‎economic differences. The mobility of the older population is influenced by their ‎perceived safety in indoor and outdoor environments. Certain features of apartment layout and furniture arrangement are identified as potential causes of falls. Older adults’ ‎perception of safety exhibits a distance-decay effect from their senior housing building. Distance decay indicates that safety is deemed highest closest to their homes and decreases as the distance increases. There are indications that older adults take longer routes and increase their mobility because they are fearful at certain spots in their neighbourhood. The thesis ‎concludes with a discussion of the results and implications for both research and policy making at the local and ‎county levels. ‎

Människors trygghetsupplevelse på tågstationer i teorin och praktiken: En fallstudie av Uppsala centralstation2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyze whether train stations can become safer and more inviting, to increase the use of public transportation. The studied area was Uppsala central station. It is located in Sweden's second largest railway city, based on its number of travelers. The goal of this study was to analyze through a case study whether Uppsala central station, both in theory and in practice, is perceived as safe and inviting. Previous studies within this field show that many of today's train stations are perceived as unsafe. Many different factors affect perceived safety. The methods that have been used in this study to fulfill the goal was an observation study and an online survey, as well as an underlying literature study. The conclusion from the observation study and the online survey show that the design of Uppsala train station is generally good, from a safety perspective. However, the study sheds light on some problems at the station. According to the observations there were some problems regarding the camera surveillance and the natural surveillance. Meanwhile, the online survey shows that the lighting and the overall sight could be improved. The results from the online survey and the observation study are in line with each other, but with a few differences as perceived safety is subjective. It was found that the researchers and all respondents perceived Uppsala central station as quite safe. The study showed only small differences between different target groups, however there were differences according to the X2-analysis between the different genders. Results show that the design of the station made women feel more unsafe than men in general. A further X2-analysis showed that there was a difference between place of residence and the perceived safety on the studied places. The tendency was that the residents of Uppsala felt safer than people from outside of Uppsala, but whether this is representative to a larger population would require further studies. According to the observation study the camera surveillance and the natural surveillance could be improved at Uppsala central station. Although, whether improving the camera surveillance is important or not could be discussed seeing that the camera surveillance was not considered important for an increased safety according to the respondents of the online survey. As the online surveys state, more and better lighting at the station was considered as the most common suggestion in order to make the station safer and more inviting. Finally, these suggestions could possibly make Uppsala central station, or similar stations, better in the future.

"Good enough": En kvalitativ intervjustudie om svenska frivårdsinspektörers erfarenheter av att använda RBM-modellen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine and illustrate Swedish probation officers’ experiences of their use of the RNR model. We have completed six qualitative interviews with probation officers. The probation officers showed a positive attitude towards the RNR model. They also showed experiences of flaws and difficulties in their use of the model and related these to the risk assessment instrument and the characteristics of the clients. The positive effects that the use of the RNR model had was that it brought structure, lucidity and focus to their work. They also pointed out the models relative advantage towards earlier methods. It was also clear that the probation officers had different views of the responsivity principle. These different views could affect their use of this principle. The difficulties regarding the use of the model that could be related to the probation officers’ experiences consisted of several possible causes. Education regarding the model was one of these possible causes that we found could explain the experienced difficulties in the probation officers use of the RNR model.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden is currently suffering from a major shortage of housing because the number of houses can’t satisfy the demand. To solve the problem more houses needs to be built. In the first half of 2016 approximately 21 000 new houses were built and another 28 000 got started. Before the builders can start the construction of the new houses, there need to be suitable land to build on.

The municipalities own a large part of the land that is suitable for residential purposes, which means that the builder often are dependant on municipal land. All municipalities who answered the question, in the 2016 housing market survey, if they own suitable land for housing replied “Yes”.

There are three main questions that will be answered in this paper:

    A. How do the municipalities price land for the construciton of apartmentbuildnings?

    B. How does quality requirements affect the land price and how are theserequirements checked by the municipality?

    C. How does the land price differ between bid and fixed priced landallocations?

To answer these questions a few different methods have been used. The first method was to review the municipal policy for land allocation which they are requeired by law to have. There were also a review done of land allocation agreements, some that were sold by bid and some that were sold with a fixed price. Finally interviews were performed with questions based on the previously done reviews.

Through the methods performed, the questions were answered. Both municipalities gives the land a value of SEK/sqm gross area where basements and cold areas are excluded. One difference is that Gävle uses external valuators while Stockholm has two internal units that performs the valuations of the land.

This work showed that neither of the municipalies have a clear method of following up on the quality requirements. During the interviews it was explained that most of the requirements were tied to the building permits validity.

The review of the land allocation agreements showed that 4 out of 5 land allocations that were made by bid were priced higher then thoose with a fixed price. It may therefore be of interest to further investigate the question.

    Abstract [en]

The unacceptable violence: A thematic content analysis of the Swedish parliamentary parties' portrayal of domestic violence.

The purpose of this thesis was to examine how the parties in the Swedish parliament depicts domestic violence and list common denominators through thematic analysis. Both feminist criminology and victimological concepts were used as theoretical frameworks. The results show that domestic violence, explained as a subcategory to male violence against women, is presented through perspectives of equality, gendered power, human rights, honor violence and cultural norms. The importance of an empowered victim perspective, often at the expense of the offenders, permeates the parties' depictions even though there are differences in their understandings and action proposals. Furthermore, there is an emphasis on the need to elevate competence levels across all community agencies that may interact with victims. Lastly, it is concluded that there is a lack of understanding in politics regarding the causes and mechanisms of domestic violence, as well as limited proposals for its prevention.

Sustainability Leaders’ Perceptions on the Drivers for and the Barriers to the Integration of Sustainability in Latin American Higher Education Institutions2018In: Sustainability, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 10, no 8, article id 2954Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Higher education institutions (HEIs) have been steadily progressing towards the integrationof sustainable practices in their structures and operations. Several studies have reported the varietyof drivers of change and the barriers to change that universities have found in the integrationprocess. The present investigation is aimed at further characterizing and ranking the drivers for,and barriers of, sustainability integration in HEIs within their structures and operating functions.Open-ended expert opinion interviews of key sustainability leaders appointed at 45 HEIs from10 Latin-American countries were conducted in order to learn lessons from their diverse experiencesof the process. Additionally, a thematic workshop on HEI sustainability was organized to facilitatefurther discussions between 23 sustainability scholars and/or national coordinators of universitynetworks from 11 Latin American countries. As a result, 15 barriers were identified as hinderingthe institutionalization of sustainability in HEIs. This study also examined the relationship betweenthese reported barriers with 13 main drivers that were identified to be facilitating the integration ofsustainable practices within the organizational and academic structures at the universities. The strongcorrespondence between the several observed drivers for, and barriers to, change highlights theimportance of strategic planning that offers integrated actions. The findings of this paper can serveas a reference to assist HEIs in identifying drivers of, and barriers to, sustainability, so that the formercan be fostered and the latter addressed effectively. This can help identify and plan targeted actionsto make the transition towards sustainability in HEIs more natural and effective.

En analys av Arbetsdomstolens arbetsvärdering i ett lönediskrimineringsmål2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to investigate how the municipality works with Effektiv Samordning för Trygghet (EST), as well as how the collaboration works within the municipality. To investigate this, we used semi-structured interviews and reviewed documents, then a thematic analysis was carried out on the material. The results showed, based on the interviewees’ statements, that the practical work agreed with the manual for EST, but that there were difficulties with the representativeness within the mapping. The interviewees had a common picture of what collaboration is, while the documents lacked precise definitions of collaboration. In addition, the results showed that the interviewees had a lack of knowledge partly regarding what the documents contained, partly about the goals of the collaborative work. It also emerged that there were difficulties between the interviewees' perception of collaboration in comparison to the perceptions in the scientific field, especially regarding role distributions. The conclusions were that there is a need to spread knowledge about the content of the documents and a clarification of what the goals for the collaborations are.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study was to examine, whether there is any connection between the preschool yard’s design and child development. Literature review in the background provides the importance of the yard and outdoor education. Outdoor stay affects the whole body both mentally and physically under Szczepanski (2008). I did a quantitative study on how teachers view their outdoor environments. Sixteen preschool teachers from three preschools got my survey. The result of my study gives a unanimous picture of, how the preschool yard can be used for both playing and learning. The design of the yard is important, and there should be a rich variety of toymaterials. Many educators stress that children develop motoric skills, interaction, empathy and respect during the outdoor play. Since my study is based on just three preschools, the results possibly can’t be generalized. However, the answers from the preschools are nearly unanimous, and the result is probably valid all over the country.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The transport system is in need of changes. Motorized transportation is widely spread, which has led to negative impact on our environment. To reduce impacts on a local level, the municipality of Gävle has started an aggressive campaign and is now promoting bicycling in the urban area. The municipality of Gävle is located about 200 km north of Stockholm. Its population is growing quickly and will soon pass the 100.000 mark. As the population grows, so does automobile traffic and the impact of the local environment. The municipality believes the bicycle is the transportation mode for providing an alternative to the car and thereby to help Gävle meet its environmental goals.

Transportation issues affect everyone in a community and to advocate for changes on transportation modes, it is important to design the city so that it meets both environmental needs as well as those of inhabitants. While the municipality of Gävle is quite large, its urban extends less than 5 km from its Centre to the inner suburbs. Short trips within this zone should be made by bicycle rather than car. This study intends to complement the work of the municipality by providing insights in how the population views opportunities to bicycle in the city, and what they must be changed to encourage inhabitants to start bicycling.

The methods I have used are divided in two main parts. First workers in the central parts of Gävle were asked about their cycling behavior and attitudes by means of a questionnaire. Second, a SWOT analysis was used to identify what high school students see as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of bicycling in Gävle’s urban centre and suburbs. The surveys were analyzed to result a generalized view of the inhabitants thought and are presented through charts. Together with the results from the SWOT analysis, conducted of opinions a strong connection between the two groups was identified which is the foundation for the conclusion.

According to the participating workers and students, it isn’t the extent of road that need adjustment. The need lies in three different things: 1) an increased acceptance among other road users towards cyclists; 2) regulations regarding how different transportation systems should interact; and 3) an increase of space in the existing bike paths.

Keywords: Bicycle, Gävle, sustainable development, SWOT-analysis, travel journal and environmental impact.

Coping strategies among international students who transition to university in Sweden: Experiences and perceptions of loneliness as an international student in Sweden2021Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the coping strategies amongst international students who moved to a medium sized city in Sweden to study. The aim is to explore how international students cope with loneliness and their perceptions and experiences related to loneliness. The method is qualitative and inductive, with deductive properties such as the topics related to loneliness, coping, resources and technology. We conducted semi structured interviews with six participants. The theory used is a strength-based perspective focusing on the resources and coping of the participants. The results show the participants express various accounts of experienced loneliness and coping strategies. The themes found were a New university and country, Social life, Society and culture, Self-agency, and Coping strategies. International students cope with loneliness by talking to family and friends, often using ICT. Other sources of support come from within the university environment. Most of the support utilized comes from the students acting themselves.

En jämförelsestudie mellan UAS-LiDAR och UAS-fotogrammetri: Utvärdering av kvalitet hos DTM2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When expanding the society a variety of analyses are needed, for instance volume calculation, land use analyses, deformation monitoring and drainage analyses. All these analyses are based on DTM. High quality on DTM is a condition to make the analyses applicable. Time and suitability are also crucial when producing the analyses, therefore UAS-LiDAR and UAS-photogrammetry are often applied, these are two data collecting methods that quickly and suitably can produce detailed DTM. To make the methods more applicable more research is needed that evaluate the methods possibilities when producing DTM.

The study is performed in association with 5D Konsulterna to evaluate how DTM produced with UAS-photogrammetry and UAS-LiDAR compare. To create a complete understanding the contributing factors need to be taken into consideration, therefore the study is performed over 4 different land types with different terrain and vegetation. The variation of land types will make it possible to draw conclusions concerning how quality is affected by different land types. The study will compare the land types outcrop, asphalt, gravel and forest and they will be controlled using control profiles which will be created according to SIS-TS 21144:2016. The control will enable evaluation of the quality in height.

The study show that both UAS-LiDAR and UAS-photogrammetry can produce DTM that represent the open areas gravel and asphalt with low deviations. Both methods met the requirements in SIS-TS 21144:2016. When the land type outcrop was evaluated both methods met the requirements in SIS-TS 21144:2016. However, both methods showed an increase of deviation mainly in RMS and variation width which was caused by the tilting terrain. The big differences in quality was seen in the land type forest where UAS-LiDAR had an average deviation at 3,8 cm and UAS-photogrammetry had an average deviation at 12,8 cm. The same tendency was seen when evaluating RMS where UAS-LiDAR had a RMS at 6,1 cm and UAS-photogrammetry had at RMS at 2,6 dm. The result showed that only UAS-LiDAR met the requirements for the land type forest in SIS-TS 21144:2016. With support from previous studies the conclusion that the difference in quality was due to vegetation in the land type forest was drawn. Vegetation has a larger impact on UAS-photogrammetry than UAS-LiDAR, therefore UAS-LiDAR should be used to achieve high quality when land types with vegetation are analysed using DTM.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe the views of community police officers towards working close to the citizen and if the views differed between community police officers in a metropolitan area and in a rural region, and if so, how they differed. Through semi structured interviews with six community police officers, three from each region, we found that all interviewees had difficulty defining what it meant to be close to the citizen. They also had difficulty distinguishing what was preventive and reactive in their work. A clear difference between the viewpoints of the work was that interviewees in the metropolitan area focused on the individuals while the interviewees in the rural areas focused on the local society. These were frequent differences throughout the result. The work of the community police officers was associated with a variety of challenges and opportunities, but all interviewees were pleased to work towards getting closer to the citizen and becoming more preventive.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to study how Swedish text- based media constructed their portrayal of victims suffering from criminal violence and also to see if there were any gender differences in these portrayals. The study was made by using a qualitative content analysis based on 24 newspaper articles from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. The analysis and coding took support from Butler’s gender- theory and Christie’s “ideal type victim”- theory. The analysis resulted in multiple similarities and differences between the female- and male victims. The greatest similarity was the portrayal of the victims as legitimate, although none of the 24 cases fell under the most stereotypical portrait of a crime- victim. The most interesting difference in the results was that the men’s obtained legitimate and dignity despite several showed some kind of doubtful lifestyle.

Barns aktiva deltagande i rollek: strategier och rollfördelning2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The essay describes the process of urbanization, focusing on the younger population that moves away from the countryside. As a background material, statistics has been gathered and is presented in the theory section of this study. The main part of this data constitutes of demographic statistics and is presented in diagrams. The data has been analysed using Excel and the computer program Tableau. The study specifically investigates whether there are any particular reasons why young people have moved from Bollnäs, in the province of Hälsingland. Hence, 10 young persons who have left Bollnäs in favour of a larger city have been asked questions in semi-structured interviews. In the study analysis, push and pull theory has been applied. This theory assumes that the young people are exposed to both pulling and pushing factors. The result of the study shows that a common reason why these young persons moved away was the prospect of higher studies, a pulling factor. Several participants also expressed a want to leave their hometown Bollnäs that they considered to be small and without prospects, a pushing factor. Moreover, some interviews with the governing politicians in the municipality of Bollnäs were carried out within this study. These politicians are aware of the demographical challenges that face the community. However, they do not have any clearly defined common strategies that prevent young people to move away from Bollnäs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the police's knowledge of and definitions of young intimate partner violence (YIPV) can affect the work with young people exposed to intimate partner violence. The study was of a qualitative method and semi-structured interviews were conducted with police officers and other professionals working with young people exposed to IPV. The main result was that the definitions for YIPV have a narrow delimitation among the police, clarified in comparison with other professional's definitions. It was also found that there are several special circumstances which distinguish YIPV from adults and that among the police there can be a lack of understanding about these. This was also demonstrated in the police's different approach to young intimate partner violence compared with other professionals, who had a victim-focused approach. Instead, the police seem to be somewhat limited to the legislation, in their treatment and working methods. In summary, there is a need for increased knowledge regarding YIPV, in order for young people's conditions to be the same as adults.

The impacts of higher education institutions on sustainable development: a review and conceptualization2019In: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, ISSN 1467-6370, E-ISSN 1758-6739, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 23-38Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

This paper aims to conceptualize impacts of higher education institutions (HEIs) on sustainable development (SD), complementing previous literature reviews by broadening the perspective from what HEIs do in pursuit of SD to how these activities impact society, the environment and the economy.

    Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2005 and 2017. Inductive content analysis was applied to identify major themes and impact areas addressed in the literature to develop a conceptual framework detailing the relationship between HEIs’ activities and their impacts on SD.

    Findings

The paper identifies six impact areas where direct and indirect impacts of HEIs on SD may occur. The findings indicate a strong focus on case studies dealing with specific projects and a lack of studies analyzing impacts from a more holistic perspective.

    Practical implications

This systematic literature review enables decision-makers in HEIs, researchers and educators to better understand how their activities may affect society, the environment and the economy, and it provides a solid foundation to tackle these impacts.

    Social implications

The review highlights that HEIs have an inherent responsibility to make societies more sustainable. HEIs must embed SD into their systems while considering their impacts on society.

    Originality/value

This paper provides a holistic conceptualization of HEIs’ impacts on SD. The conceptual framework can be useful for future research that attempts to analyze HEIs’ impacts on SD from a holistic perspective.

Walking old paths with new perspectives. Stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability2023Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Stakeholder engagement has been recognised as one of the main principles for organisational sustainability. However, there is only limited knowledge on the role of stakeholder engagement in evolving organisational sustainability approaches such as sustainable business models (SBM) and circular economy (CE). There is also only fragmented research on how organisations engage with stakeholders and how the engagement needs to be adapted to facilitate the transition to SBMs and CE in relation to existing sustainability approaches focused on organisational sustainability practices (OSP). The purpose of this thesis is therefore to enhance knowledge on stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability, considering the role, practices and potential to facilitate transitions to SBMs and CE in relation to OSP.

Three research questions drive this thesis which compiles five papers based on four individual studies. The first and the second study concentrate on how organisations engage with stakeholders for OSP and SBM, applying quantitative and qualitative methods respectively. The third study analyses the role of stakeholder engagement in SBMs, using a systematic literature review. The fourth study explores how stakeholder engagement needs to be adapted for SBMs and CE in relation to OSP, using qualitative methods.

The results reveal the multi-faceted role of stakeholder engagement in SBMs and CE. Engagement practices for SBMs are dependent on the focus and intended outcome, while engagement for CE was extended and levelled up in relation to engagement for OSP. Continuous and changing engagement practices are needed to facilitate the transition to SBMs, and the conceptual understanding of stakeholder engagement from linear to circular needs to be adapted for CE transitions.

This thesis contributes to sustainability, stakeholder, business model and CE literature by providing new perspectives on the role, extent, and form of stakeholder engagement for organisational sustainability. For practitioners, insights are offered on how to foster stakeholder engagement and with that move towards organisational sustainability.

Moving toward a circular economy in manufacturing organizations: the role of circular stakeholder engagement practices2023In: The International Journal of Logistics Management, ISSN 0957-4093, Vol. 34, no 3, p. 674-698Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The circular economy (CE) approach has been acknowledged as key for manufacturing organizations wishing to overcome sustainability challenges. However, the transition has been slow. Stakeholder engagement is a driver of the transition, but there is limited knowledge on stakeholder engagement practices in a CE context. The purpose of this paper is thus to explore with whom, on what and how organizations engage with stakeholders to implement CE as part of sustainability efforts.

    Design/methodology/approach

This study is situated at the intersection of CE, stakeholder theory and supply chain literature. A case study with three Swedish manufacturing organizations was conducted to explore stakeholder engagement practices that facilitate the implementation of CE in organizational practice and the supply chain, considering conceptual differences between stakeholder engagement for sustainability and CE.

    Findings

This study provides empirical evidence on how manufacturing organizations engage stakeholders to implement CE as part of organizations' sustainability efforts. The study highlights that manufacturing organizations have to move not only from linear to circular resource flows, but also from linear to circular stakeholder engagement. Such engagement can be achieved by extending with whom, expanding on what and leveling up how stakeholders are engaged.

    Originality/value

This study provides an enhanced conceptual understanding of stakeholder engagement in the CE context and discusses differences regarding stakeholder engagement based on linear thinking. The study emphasizes the role of circular stakeholder engagement practices for the transition toward CE in manufacturing organizations.

Stakeholder interaction for sustainability in seaports. Analysing the implementation and its linkages to overarching interaction efforts2021In: European Business Review, ISSN 0955-534X, E-ISSN 1758-7107, Vol. 33, no 5, p. 693-724Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – This study aims to analyse how and to what extent stakeholder interaction for sustainability is implemented in organisations and the linkages to the overarching interaction efforts.

Design/methodology/approach – This study was conducted in the context of seaports. To examine interaction activities with stakeholders for sustainability and how they are implemented, the study uses content analysis of sustainability reports.

Findings – The results show that the majority of ports recognise the importance of stakeholder interaction to create value and guide organisational sustainability; however, it is implemented to varying levels and degrees, which affects the form and extent of the overarching interaction efforts. The paper proposes four categories of implementing stakeholder interaction, showing the linkages to the number of stakeholder groups involved, sustainability dimensions covered and interaction approaches used.

Originality/value – This paper contributes to sustainability, stakeholder and management literature by highlighting different levels of implementation of stakeholder interaction for sustainability and its linkages to overarching efforts that may affect the sustainable development of an organisation. The results of this study provide a better understanding of stakeholder interaction within organisational sustainability approaches and implementation in sustainability-oriented business models. As organisations seek to increase their sustainability performance, these insights may be useful for both academia and practice.

Companies have been under increasing pressure to engage with stakeholders to advance their sustainability engagement. Collaboration has been recognised as a key element in such efforts. While the need for collaboration among organisations is increasingly recognised, there is still a need to better understand with whom companies collaborate, and how stakeholders might influence the process. This study analyses how companies collaborate in regards to sustainability and highlights the need to differentiate between influence on stakeholders and importance when establishing collaboration partnerships. This research proposes a collaboration for sustainability model including internal and external stakeholders on the vertical and horizontal level.

Why International Exchanges at Undergraduate Level?2004Conference paper (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns the value of international exchanges at Universities. It carries forward the exploration of a link between international exchanges and the quality of higher education. The method used is based on a description of my own experience as an international departmental co-ordinator and a teacher, discussions with teachers and students who have been on exchange programmes and a critical reflection on the work that has been done at The Department of Business Administration, University of Gävle.

The study showed that teachers´ and students´ exchange creates creativity and curiosity and makes the quality of teaching better by developing knowledge from different perspectives. That means, students/teachers get knowledge i.e. on using other pedagogical methods and languages and in organising and keeping new relations. The exchange develops the social skills of teachers and students and the understanding between people from different societies. To summarize, international exchange legitimises the study programs offered in different places to the international scientific society. Teachers and students gain self-confidence on developing networks and being international citizens. For this reason, it is particularly important to consider the importance of international exchange programmes and thus create creative conditions for successful and sustainable development of higher education.

    Abstract [en]

The first essay in this section studies the academization of vocational and professional trainings. It has long been thought that bringing preciously nonacademic occupational training programmes into the academy would increase both the quality and status of that training. Nursing’s and teaching’s trainings were among the first such programmes to be integrated into the university and construed as “sciences” in their own right. The academization process has since then expanded exponentially, today including accredited tertiary-education courses and programmes in golf coaching and pet-store management. Concurrent with the trend of academization of occupational training, we can see a de-academization of traditional subjects, as these are required to take into consideration the market requirements and consumer demands. The result is that tendencies merge in a homogenized form of academic organization and academic practice. The mass university requires flexible and manageable solutions. These usually take the form of standardized routines with regard to methods and forms of presentation, which are taught through the use of standardized manuals and handbooks. The author describes how the focus on method, design and disposition in the composition of essays and reports alters what the student is taught about scientific method and therefore how he conceives of it.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine how the media portrays social work with children and the resulting impacts on social work. The design of the study resembles a systematic literature review where a combination of 12 national and international scholarly articles has been reviewed using narrative synthesis and analyzed based on the theory of symbolic interactionism. The result of the review is presented based on the occurrence of negative, positive, and neutral portrayals of social workers in the media. The negative portrayal was the most prominent, with criticism mainly directed towards social workers related to cases where children have been harmed. Positive portrayal of social work was something that rarely occurred. The portrayal has resulted in both positive and negative consequences that have affected both the social worker and the general public.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study occupational injury reports of the violence against healthcare staff during the years 2002–2020 throughout Sweden and Gävleborg, and inspect the differences between the cases. Furthermore, this thesis aimed to study the improvements the care staff in Gävleborg submitted in their applications, and see if the improvements in Gävleborg could be used to prevent the violence-categories. The results show an increased frequency of reports from 2002 until 2020. Violence without weapons accounts for 81% of the total reports. The share of work environment /routines reports decreased from 27% to 6%between 2009 and 2020 in Sweden. The content analysis showed that the improvements could be used to prevent violence against the care staff. In Gävleborg there was a sharp uptake in reports as of 2016. In conclusion, the reports have increased and the improvements in the reportscould help prevent workplace violence.

    Abstract [en]

The Planning and Building Act regulates how municipalities plan the use of land and water. When deciding on the detailed development plan, the respective municipality is responsible for the parking standard in the space that will be allocated for parking and which is made in connection with land construction. The decision is followed up in the building permit process. One of the requirements for building permits being granted is that the parking solution is approved. A public parking lot lease is a solution that is approved by law regarding parking in another area beyond one's own property. The municipality can be a party in the agreement for leasing public parking lots in the role of land access provider and may be responsible for preparing the parking lot. In order to be valid, the lease shall guarantee a measure of permanence over time.

The rights that accompany the parking lot agreement need to be monitored by authority decisions that cause a change in land use. The municipalities' responsibility to meet the policy's stated objective to increase housing may result in already built-up areas becoming denser. Surfaces such as parking lots may be used for this purpose. Increased density in municipalities requires new detailed development planning.

Thirty of the country's municipalities with the highest number of completed buildings, specifically multi-family housing, were examined for the time period 2005-2016. The basis for the analysis was experiencing increased density where the land area has been affected in relation to objects for public parking leases. Current legislation is interpreted to find support for the validity of leasing public parking lots in cases of changes in land use.

This study's research question relates to how the municipality should handle their role in decisions on changed land use, as a party to the civil parking lease agreement and as a public authority.

The results highlight the validity of agreements to lease public parking lots despite civil authorities' decisions that change the use of land within the area in question. It is suggested that the municipality, as a civil party to the agreement, must monitor legal right by entering into the agreement. As an authority, the municipality has the responsibility to monitor and follow up the underlying decisions of the regulating authority and building permission decisions, the assessment of which may depend on the approval of the suggested solution for parking. Thus, the new decision regarding land use should not be in conflict with the underlying decisions which also continue to be valid.

It is recommended that municipal administrations and companies cooperate closely in the early stages of the detailed development planning process. This is necessary to ensure that the legal right resulting from agreements to lease public parking lots is taken into consideration. The working documents in the form of geographical information may include demarcated areas which include leased public parking lots.

Symbols and emotions in Swedish crime policy discourse2019Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The general public has assumed an increasingly prominent position in crime policy discourse, both in Sweden and internationally. Nowadays crime policy initiatives often acknowledge and respond to the presumed concerns of the general public, for instance through the promise of safety. This thesis analyses how political parties encourage the public to engage emotionally in crime policy matters. Since public involvement is crucial in elections, the election campaigns of political parties have served as the empirical basis of my studies. The three articles included in the thesis together examine the election campaigns in Sweden from 2006 to 2018.

In this body of work, it is assumed that the emotional address of the political parties can be analysed by paying specific attention to the political use of symbols and the discursive organisation of emotions. The thesis illustrates how the welfare context influences the ways in which crime policy is communicated and legitimised in Sweden. Values and ideals associated with the welfare state and with the related notion of a ‘Nordic exceptionalism’ – such as equality, benevolence, social cohesion, trust and safety – permeate the Swedish crime policy discourse. By interpreting these values and ideals as a system of symbols, I stress the need to explore them in relation to the general public and with regards to the emotional appeal these symbols might have.

In my work, I emphasise variation and contradiction regarding emotional tones and I explore the norms circumscribing emotional expressions in crime policy discourse. I have treated emotions as being present in all political communication. This suggests that emotions are not only being encouraged in the ‘hot’ emotional climate, but also in the more emotionally restrained discourse and when politicians allude to the utility of political measures. The results point towards the need to distinguish between emotions and to the exploration of the relationship between them since different emotions are associated with their distinct consequences and they influence how we are encouraged to perceive and feel for different crime policy measures.

The thesis concludes that the political use of symbols and emotions should be understood as having a reassuring function. It is further suggested that symbols and emotions can be used politically both in order to limit and to promote change with regards to Swedish crime policy discourse.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate, through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, how social workers in the Stockholm area describe the phenomenon of recruiting children and youth to street gangs and how they experience their working conditions related to the target group. The theories New Public Management and the theory of social bonds are used as a theoretical framework. In the results, three main themes emerged; (1) you have no idea what you're saying yes to, (2) costs, the law and what we know works, and (3) it takes a village. The results show that the phenomenon of recruitment, based on descriptions, can be perceived in different ways. In the interviews, however, there is a predominant consensus and thephenomenon is explained on the basis that there has been a change regarding age and the attitudes of the target group. Even social relations, and bonds to society, are declared to be important. The result explains that the social workers’ consider themselves to have a good leeway for action despite several limitations. It appears that cost-effectiveness and follow-ups of results influence the work of the social workers and that a bureaucratic management strategy imminently shapes their work.

Skogsköpares motiv till beslut om köp av skogsfastighet: En jämförelse mellan Norrbotten och Kronobergs län2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    ledande positioner inom handikappomsorgen.

    Abstract [en]

Our purpose was that through semi-structured interviews with professionals from relevant organizations and an authority, which comes in contact with men who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual violence, highlight and analyze their experiences and perceptions of these men's victimization. The organizations and the authority that they worked for was a non-profit organization, a hospital and the Swedish police.

When it comes to these men it has emerged that they rarely contact support organizations and/or file a police report. The reason for this is, according to our study, among other factors the norms of masculinity that exist in society which claims that men can not be victims of neither domestic violence nor sexual violence, men are expected to be able to defend themselves or they are themselves the perpetrators.
