Jag älskar döden mer än ni älskar livet! ”: En kvalitativ studie om varför IS/DAESH krigare valt att strida för islamiska staten2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital development has made the efficiency of extremist networks possible. Internet and social media have been developed and started to be used as "human web-networks" for the recruitment of like-minded people with the same ideological hopes. For DAESH, this is something positive. The purpose is to give a deeper understanding of why young men join the DAESH. The empirical basis therefore consists of interviews conducted with DAESH warriors who are detained in place in northern Iraq. The opportunity to gain access to these respondents for both the study and the empirical basis is unique. The method used is of a qualitative nature. Furthermore, the profit part represents the empirical basis. Authors have transcribed the interviews, and then conducted a thematidation of collected data. With direct quotes from the material, authors argue that there are recurring patterns in it as respondents. The study concludes that young men join the DAESH because of social disorganization and the lack of strong social ties.

Critical thinking and ideological thinking2022Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

At least in the context of (higher) education pedagogy, critical and ideological thinking are regarded as irreconcilable opposites: one desideratum, the other anathema. In the aftermath of WWII, for example, the first official mention of critical thinking as a goal in Swedish education assigned it a crucial role in the making of independent democratic citizens capable of resisting propaganda (SOU 1948, p. 504). But the distinction between critical thinking and ideology is not so clear-cut. Opposing camps within critical thinking studies have accused each other of ideological blindness (Burbules & Berk 1999). Inasmuch as critical thinking as an educational goal has become a normative idea ritualistically iterated in educational policies and in curricular parlance, it can be said to perform the function of legitimizing and perpetuating a certain worldview in support of a larger and systematic body of normative ideas that we may call “ideology”. Finally, as Leo Berglund (following Luc Boltanski) argues in his recent PhD dissertation, the appropriation and operationalization of the potentially subversive critical dimension of critical thinking by the educational institution’s actors (researchers, educators) and within the educational institution for the purpose of strengthening its position and justifying its mission is fundamentally an ideological act (Berglund 2021, p. 50). Conversely, ideological thinking may not be so incompatible with democratic life if, following Clifford Geertz (1973), we conceive of ideologies as indispensable symbol-systems that provide blueprints for social and psychological processes and can therefore be considered prerequisites for our condition as political animals.

It matters how we define critical and ideological thinking. For the former, I will use the taxonomy I presented in a recent article on critical thinking in the course objectives of English literary studies in Sweden. In that article, I identified four major models of critical thinking in higher education: as cognitive-argumentative skills, as cognitive-argumentative skills and psychosocial dispositions (these first two comprising the Critical Thinking Movement), as resistance to oppression through critical pedagogy, and as a crucial step toward critical acting and being, a direction known as criticality (Cananau 20021). Out of the many theories of ideology, I rely on Paul Ricoeur and Clifford Geertz’s approaches, which are particularly appealing for literary historians.

Populism, Democracy, and the Humanities: Interdisciplinary Explorations and Critical Enquiries2022Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this volume, twelve Sweden-based researchers reflect on the phenomenon and concept of populism in relation to democracy and the humanities from the multiple vantage points of various disciplinary backgrounds: philosophy, history of ideas, media and communication, journalism, political science, gender studies, organization science, education theory, popular culture, and literary studies. While the study of populism has attracted a lot of attention in political science, this topic has been rarely explored by scholars in the humanities. Rather than contribute to the already established area of populism studies in social and political sciences, our authors take a more open and exploratory stance through which they attempt to open up new fields and directions for inquiry from an interdisciplinary humanistic perspective.

Nietzsche, On God and Other Human Crafts.: Considerations of his Positive Philosophy.2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nietzsche’s philosophy is often attacked as ultimately pessimistic, relativistic, or destructive. Little or non-attention has been paid to his positive philosophy as such. This research intends to elucidate Nietzsche’s positive philosophy in light of his critical philosophy. This is done by showing the artificial character of the dogmatic conceptions that underlie traditional philosophy, metaphysics, religions, and humankind’s perception of reality in general. Here, the death of god is read as Nietzsche intended: as a diagnostic of his time. This is done accompanied by a fine and detailed analysis of the main points of his critique: the idea of thing-in-itself, absolute truth, substance, cause and effect, logic, etc. and the main points of his proposal: the overman, the eternal recurrence, will to power, transvaluation of values, etc. Ultimately, Nietzsche’s constructive philosophy depends on recognizing the artificial character of human crafts in an accentuation of life.

Tro och vetande: en undersökning av Ingemar Hedenius religionskritik2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vilken roll spelar retorik i Hedenius argumentering?

    Abstract [sv]

The relevance of a Polanyi-inspired analysis when interpreting socio-economic developments in the Nordics2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the suggested paper I want to show that Polanyi-inspired models of interpretation and derived concepts can help us finding new ways of understanding Nordic developments. Most of the empiric material will come from Sweden. My frame of analysing as well as central references can be found in Hollander (2017). In this abstract I do two things: First I give some hints as to how I position my own views in relation to what I understand to be the intended main discourse at the conference. Second I illustrate the fruitfulness of analysing Swedish developments when bringing a Polanyian paradigm up to date.

    1) Positioning

From an admittedly shallow reading of the two keynotes – Andreas Bergh and Erik Bengtsson – I infer that my understanding of Nordic developments differ from both. They of course have divergent views in relation to each other on a number of key issues but my preliminary view is that my position represents yet a third view.

For illustrative purposes I can mention that the social capital erosion following from the restructuring of the public sector, the rising inequality etc to my mind will have devastating effects on the long term resilience of the institutions. Other contradictions in types of analysis I believe can be deduced from Polanyian concepts such as Reciprocity and retrograde countermovements (see below). The concept retrograde countermovement rests on an interpretation rather than being Polanyian in a strict sense. So is the conceptembedded liberalism which is useful and can be understood in relation to Polanyi. It is, however, doubtful to me whether Polanyi used the term when discussing post-world war II developments. (This is discussed in an illuminating way by Gareth Dale in Karl Polanyi: A Life on the Left. See also the review of that book by Robert Kuttner in NYRB 21/12/2017).

In relation to the problematique of Trondheim conference I am convinced that the frame I suggest could be very fruitful also for interpreting other Nordic countries than Sweden. I will, however, not have the time to dive deep into this before June.

    2) Emerging Concepts for Understanding Nordic-type Models.

Useful Polanyian concepts can emerge from sketching the rise and fall of Swedish embedded liberalism.

My departure in the main part of the paper will be a chapter where I studied ‘The Contemporary Relevance of Karl Polanyi’ with Sweden as a vantage point (Hollander 2017 – <http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-23542>). A central aspect was Financialisation. This is a global trend but it has been effected at an extraordinary pace in Sweden.

In the 1960s our country was heralded as a paradigm of decommodification. Regulation of financial markets interacted with physical and social capital accumulation, building the Welfare State and (re-) embedding of labour, housing etc.

Financial regulations were removed and recommodification tried in the 1980s but the processes started in earnest in the early 1990s. Commodification prepared for pervasive financialisation also in such areas as childcare, schooling, eldercare, health etc. The financialisation of Swedish HEW led me to the idea that Polanyi’s list of fictitious commodities might have to be extended with Semi-fictitious Commodities

The logic behind the creation of Semi-fictitious Commodities can be better understood by studying Swedish developments. And the same applies to other fields of study of Polanyian relevance.

One example is the importance of focusing a form of economic coordination discussed by Polanyi et.al. (1957)[Polanyi, K., Arensberg, C. M. and Pearson, H. W. (eds.) (1957) Trade and Market in the Early Empires: Economies in History and Theory. Illinois: The Free Press].
I am referring to Reciprocity– the oldest form of human coordination for wellbeing. It has ben largely neglected by economists who have focused instead on two other forms – Market and Redistribution.

When studying the centuries’ long building of the institutions of embedded liberalismand the contemporary tearing down of them Reciprocity is important. Sweden provides pertinent examples of this and of other aspects of the rise and fall of those institutions. The risks that laissez-faire type disembedding can pave the way for right-wing authoritarianism are also illuminated. Weakened Reciprocity and Redistribution open up for retrograde countermovements.

Also the dependency on higher-level developments (higher than the national level) are made clear when this small country is looked at. Bretton Woods in 1944 was important for building of the welfare state. Four decades later Sweden was able to withstand the reemergence of global finance longer than most other countries in the global north but when this ended the consequences were thoroughgoing. As Polanyi argued, the forces unleashed by attempts to make ‘money’ into a commodity, must be put at centre stage.

Important sections of the proposed paper will deal with how the legacies of Swedish embedded liberalism, and some of the lessons from the disembedding, can be used for the future. As examples of the legacies from the golden age of Swedish social democracy I can point to good relative records in areas such as Gender equalityWork-place codeterminationPeer-to-peer-productionand Ecological sustainability. Interpretations of how those traits emerged can provide relevant lessons for the future of work globally.

Vår tids inspirationskällor: En kvalitativ studie om hur följare uppfattar samt påverkas av influensers på Instagram2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Author: Patricia HämäläinenTitle and subtitle (English): Today's sources of inspiration - A qualitative study of how followers perceive and are influenced by influencers on InstagramLanguage: Swedish Pages: 39

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how 18–30-year-old women’s on Instagram are affected by influencers' publications on Instagram. What factors play a role for Instagram users to start follow and unfollow influencers on Instagram.

Method: The study is based on a qualitative method been used by an of a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews. The method is well suited for answering this type of question and therefore this type of method has been used. One survey and 3 depth interviews have been conducted with women aged 18-30 who follow Influencers on Instagram. The respondents answered questions that concern their opinions, perceptions and experiences about influencers they themselves follow on Instagram.

Result / analysis: Respondents tend to compare their opinions and skills with influencers they follow on Instagram. Comparisons take place when individuals experience a sense of equality and belonging with the comparison group. Previous research suggests that it is more common for individuals to compare themselves with an environment that they experience as better than themselves (Festinger 1954).

Conclusion: The conclusion of the study shows that the main reasons why young women start following influencers on Instagram are to be inspired and motivated, but the experience of friendship and belonging also plays a significant role. The respondents' experiences reflect Festinger's (1954) theory of how people often compare their opinions and skills in relation to their surroundings, which can then affect young women's mental health.

    Abstract [en]

Agnostics as well as theists should answer evidential arguments from evil, at least when confronted with them. In this paper, I answer such an argument by appealing to sceptical agnosticism. A sceptical agnostic is not only undecided about the existence of a perfectly good and omnipotent God, but also believes that we cannot make any judgement about whether or not seemingly gratuitous evil probably is gratuitous. I argue that such agnosticism has several advantages compared with sceptical theism.

The God who Seeks but Seems to Hide2016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to reconstruct and evaluate two types of responses to an evidential argument from divine hiding, namely the ‘value agnostic’ response and the ‘theodicy’ response. In the study, the term ‘divine hiding’ refers to the experience of all those who find themselves having inconclusive evidence for the existence of God.

According to the argument in focus, the fact that there is divine hiding that does not seem to be necessary for any particular greater good, or to avoid a worse evil, makes it improbable that God exists.

In accordance with the value agnostic response, it is argued that it would not be surprising if divine hiding were necessary to realise greater goods or to avoid worse evils that are beyond our ken. In which case the goods or avoidance of evils in question could figure in a reason God might have for hiding. It is concluded that the value agnostic response is successful.

The theodicy response states that divine hiding is probably necessary to realise greater goods or to avoid worse evils that are within our ken. It is argued that it would not be surprising if the realisation of the goods or avoidance of evils in question would in turn be sufficient for the realisation of worse evils that are beyond our ken. In which case the goods and avoidance of evils referred to in the theodicy response could not figure in a reason God might have for hiding. It is concluded that the theodicy response is a failure

Finally, some further problems and prospects on which the study sheds light are discussed. In particular, it is argued that – although believers do not seem to have an evidential problem with believing in a God who seems to hide there might be an existential or practical problem, in particular for non-believers, when seeking a God who seems to hide.

Vidgade perspektiv på lidandets problem2022Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the fan culture surrounding the TV series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on TikTok. It aims to investigate how TikTok videos romanticize and sexualize the actor Evan Peters, who plays Jeffrey Dahmer in the series. The study analyzes the representation of the character in TikTok videos and explores whether these Dahmer-TikToks contribute to the romanticization of serial killers in general. The research includes a multimodal discourse analysis of visual material from TikTok and a survey to gather TikTok users' attitudes and perceptions. The survey findings indicate that the majority of respondents have encountered the type of Dahmer-TikToks investigated, and a significant percentage interpret them as romanticizing or sexualizing. The study suggests that the socio-cultural tradition of how people view serial killers may be changing due to the distribution of romanticized and sexualized Dahmer-TikToks. The analysis aligns with the survey results, supporting the premise of the thesis. The TV series and its respective TikTok trend have also spawned a fan culture; users create, share, and engage with romantic videos of Dahmer. Overall, the study highlights the presence of videos with sexual, romantic, or objectifying elements related to Dahmer on TikTok and indicates a potential shift in societal discourse regarding serial killers.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is a study of a dialogue between science and religion at the John Templeton foundation. The aim has been to investigate the value of this specific dialogue and also to get an understanding of the value of dialogues between science and religion in general regarding actuality and fruitfulness for the participants, the audience and the public debate. The study of the Templeton dialogue revealed shortcomings regarding definitions and guidelines, choice of participants and of topic. Furthermore, the argumentation was based on the individual participants belief or non-belief rather than their professional competence areas. The different contributions to the dialogue did not show any higher degree of fresh ideas, apart from two short essays describing new definitions of God. These thoughts were, however, not brought to the debates that were also a part of the dialogue. Despite the shortcomings, where many should have been possible to avoid, the studied dialogue showed willingness from people of different perspectives to meet and the dialogue also gained an interest from the general public. The conclusion of this study is that with clear definitions and guidelines and a well-considered choice of topic, the dialogue between science and religion should have a future.

Hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck - som drabbar pojkar och unga män: En kvalitativ analys2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to explore how organizations, who are assigned to meet boys and young men who are victims of honour related violence and oppression, describe their situation. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews and form-content analysis has been used. Our theoretical framework consists of masculinity theory, the ideal victim as well as the culture-related perspective. The results of the study showed that boys and young men who are victims of honour-related violence is also often perpetrators in the same context. The violence and oppression they face is like the one suffered by young girls and women and that a triggering factor for suffering is to violate family norms. The conclusions we have drawn is that our results are in line with previous research. It´s also both central and major that boys and young men live up to the concept of masculinity, to avoid becoming a victim of honour-related violence.

    Abstract [sv]

Om några häften: bildning2009In: Gefle Dagblad, no 17 marsArticle in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

Determing a Semantics for Imperatives in Instructions2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Masters thesis aims to determine the requirements of a semantics for imperatives in the domain of navigation instructions. Pragmatic and semantic theories and computational approaches to imperatives will be examined. The overall aim is to bridge the gap between natural language imperatives and their interpretation in a logic of action, and to determine what is required to represent a range of linguistic phenomena from a corpus of navigation instructions. A grammar providing an underspecified semantic representation of simple imperatives is presented and issues of what type of interpretation should  be performed at which level in a hypothetical architecture for interpreting imperatives are discussed.
