    Abstract [en]

The increasing prevalence of ageing stepfamilies and the potential of stepchildren to act as asource of support for older parents have increased the interest in long-term intergenerational steprelationships. Applying a life-course perspective combined with Simmel’s theorizing on socialdynamics, this exploratory study aims to investigate the preconditions for cohesion in long-termintergenerational step relationships. The study is based on interviews with 13 older parents, aged66–79, who have raised both biological children and stepchildren. Retrospective life-courseinterviews were used to capture the development of step relationships over time. Interviewswere analysed following the principles of analytical induction. The results reveal four centralthird-party relationships that are important for cohesion in intergenerational step relationshipsover time, involving: (1) the intimate partner; (2) the non-residential parent; (3) the bridge child;and (4) the stepchild-in-law. The findings have led to the conclusion that if we are to understandthe unique conditions for cohesion in long-term intergenerational step relationships, we cannotsimply compare biological parent–child dyads with step dyads, because the step relationship isessentially a mediated relationship.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a neglected reality in Swedish social research: New romantic relationships in later life. Our theoretical points of departure are the transformation of intimacy and the transition from a culture of marriage to a culture of divorce. We ask if the transformation of intimacy has reached later life and investigate late life divorce, attitudes to and choice of union form in late life heterosexual relationships, relationship history and the importance of a relationship for life satisfaction. The results, which are based both on demographic data and a survey to 60-90 year old Swedes (n=1225), show that changing relationship patterns in late modern Sweden have reached older people. In romantic relationships initiated in later life LAT is the preferred union form, followed by cohabitation, while marriage is a rare choice. In some respects this makes older people an avant-garde in the investigation of alternative union forms. The results also show the importance of romantic relationships for life satisfaction in later life independent of union form. Finally we criticize Swedish census data, which is based on civil status, for giving a somewhat distorted image of older people's family and romantic lives.

    Abstract [en]

Public safety in Sweden. A study of a crime policy symbol

Public safety has become an increasingly important part of crime policy debates in the Western countries. In Sweden, the concepts of trygghet (safety) and its negative counterpart otrygghet (insecurity) are often used in discussions about public safety and fear of crime. In this article, I argue that in order to understand Swedish crime policy, the symbolic meaning of these concepts cannot be overlooked. The political debates on public safety preceding the general elections in 2006, 2010 and 2014 are analysed with reference to three political parties: the Social Democratic party, the Conservative Party (Moderaterna) and the Sweden Democrats. By analysing the concept of safety (trygghet) as a condensation symbol, with its imaginative potential stemming from the historically strong relation between safety and the welfare state, this article illustrates how political solutions within the crime policy field are depicted as benign and universal. The article further explores how the political usage of the concept of safety generates feelings of ”national pride” to the general public.

Emotional expressions in the Swedish discourse on crime: A comparison of the 2018 Moderate and Social Democratic election campaigns2023Inngår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 60, nr 1, s. 33-55Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present article has been to explore how the public is encouraged to engage emotionally in criminal policy matters. By comparing how two of the largest political parties in Sweden – the Moderate Party and the Social Democratic Party – express emotions during the 2018 election campaigns, the article has illustrated an emotional political struggle over voters. Even though worry and (dis)trust are prominently articulated emotions by both political parties, they address these emotions in different ways and the parties also differ regarding which emotions they encourage in the public. The Moderate Party describes worry and distrust as a result of a correct evaluation of society’s state, the constituted solution being to change social conditions through an advancement of state control. Instead, The Social Democratic Party portrays worry as a result of the uncertainty of the future, and the party encourage the public to invest in trust in others to overcome this worry.

    Abstract [en]

Increase in work related violence. A reflection of changes in working conditions? An analysis based on the Swedish Work Environment surveys.

Victim surveys from Sweden show that the proportion reporting exposure to work related violence has increased. On the basis of the Swedish Work Environment surveys 1991–2005 this article focuses on the following questions: What kind of situations and working conditions are related to workplace violence? And, has the number of employees exposed to these working conditions increased parallel to the rise of reported workplace violence? Logistic regression analysis shows that some situations and working conditions are indeed related tothe risk of violence. To some extent exposure to these working conditions co-varies with exposure to violence. This result is more prominent for women than for men. Further research is needed to understand how changes in working conditions affect the risk of violence and the development thereof, not least from a gender perspective. Even so, changes in working conditions can not alone explain the increase of reported workplace violence in Sweden during this period. It seems that the influence of changed working conditions offers an interesting complement to criminological theories of broadened definitions and decreasing tolerance against violence in problematizing how an increase in reported workplace violence should and could be understood.

    Street-gang violence in Sweden is a growing concern2017Inngår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 54, nr 4, s. 365-368Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Over the past 30 years, Sweden has witnessed a growth in criminal gangs. Gun violence among young males is also on the rise and have only recently gained wide political attention. Street gangs and gun violence are two prevalent, partially overlapping phenomena that constitute social challenges. Empirically supported legal, policy and practical frameworks are needed in order to reduce the prevalence of gangs and gang violence in Sweden. The first step is to recognize that gangs and gang violence are an emerging societal problem and to identify its root causes, organizational dimensions, and operational patterns. In this note, Swedish street gangs and gang violence are briefly discussed.

    Animerade Disneyfilmer – för barn eller vuxna?2005Inngår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, nr 4, s. 13-20Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

Underdogs, rebels, and heroes: Crime narratives as a resource for doing masculinity in autobiographies2020Inngår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 57, nr 3-4, s. 289-311Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article shows how autobiographies of famous, socially well-established men (re)produce hegemonic masculinity through narratives of offending; how masculine performance is age graded; and that masculinity constructions are accomplished both via what is said and what is not said. The autobiographies of the footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the former high jumper Patrik Sjoberg and Sweden's most famous criminologist, Professor Leif G.W. Persson, are analysed. Common to all three is that they openly describe a variety of crimes they have committed. These three men are highly respected in Sweden and none of them is considered as "a criminal" in general opinion. This article shows that crime can be a resource for doing masculinity even for famous, successful and highly respected men. The crime narratives in these autobiographies tell us something about the culturally accepted representations of masculinity that may not just pass as possible, but even as desirable.

Preventing violence at work. A study of descriptions of safety measures in Swedish trade union journals 1978-2004

The purpose of this study is to examine if perceptions of interventions aimed at violence in the workplace have changed since the 1970s. In the beginning of the study period, structural factors are seen as the dominating explanation for workplace violence. The crime perspective rises in the 1990’s and methods of intervention becomes the control- and justice functions of larger society. The result shows search for accountability to be a salient factor for understanding the development towards an increasing use of penal sanctions.

    Abstract [sv]

Violence at work as a social problem. A study of the media coverage on workplace violence in Swedish trade union journals 1978-2004.

The main purpose of this study was to find out the extent of the unions media coverage on workplace violence and the ways in which the topic was framed. The study shows that the reporting of violence in the workplace described in journals is on a stable level during the period 1978-98. However from the year 2000 and onwards, there is a clear increase in the attention. Four categories of workplace violence were used to identify and recognize different types of violence: intrusive-, consumer-, relationship- and organizational violence. This shows that much of the attention over time has shifted from intrusive violence to organizational violence and consumer violence. What seems to have happened is that workplace violence has become more than just robberies and assaults in the retail business. The stereotypical image of the criminal is challenged by non-traditional criminals like nurses, elderly people and companies. Certain groups, e g care workers, come to account for an increasing proportion of attention, both as perpetrators and victims of violence. This study is an important step in understanding the increased reports of workplace violence in Sweden.
